The beer arrives from the tap with a thin, tan tinged head. The beer is an amber-tinged, brown color that shows a clear, amber hue around the edges. The aroma has some vanillin and coconut notes to it up front, but then has a sort of sour twinge to it. The malt and barrel character combine to give this a toasted, nutty aroma, and there also is a sort of musty, earthy quality to this brew. As I work my way through the glass, and gain more head space, rounded, rich notes of vanillin, and toasted coconut become more apparent, but there is still a sharp, whiskey barrel note to the finish.
The beer is fairly dry, and quite light bodied for a beer of this strength. The finish has a whiskey like alcohol warming to it that you can just about feel all the way down to your stomach. The carbonation provides a soft prickly character, which is nice with the light viscosity and palate presence that this has. The finish has a sort of tart, whiskey like fruitiness to it, and there is also a slight raisin like flavor to this as well. Earthy, toasted, spicy grain notes meld with whole grain toast, and a bit of earthy slightly roasted bite in the finish. If you keep this on the tongue, there is a soft, malty, toasted caramelized, sweetness to this beer, but this is fairly fleeting.
Not bad, but really not all that great either; the beer lacks a roundness, and malt complexity that is required to really integrate well with the barrel treatment, despite the fact that the barrel character isn’t overwhelming here.
On tap at the Wilson Street Four Peaks brewery location where it is the Bourbon Barrel Aged RyeWine at 11% ABV. It was poured into a squat tulip glass with deep ruby red hued mahogany body that supports a light tan head of foam and leaving behind some sheet lacing. The aroma offers up smooth sweet bourbon and spicy almost fresh oak wood notes. Behind those aromatics I get sweet vanilla and a faint “beer” like sensation off in the background. The taste is similar with smooth sweet bourbon notes and a quick flash of raisins and prunes before a vanilla surfaces about midway. Toward the finish raisins and cherry ester notes are a bit more noticeable as the “beer” tries to peek through all the barrel-ness that persists like a firm sweet vanilla note, some spicy oak wood and sweet bourbon booze that finally begins to fade away. Sampled @ AZ Strong Beer Fest. Nice mahogany pour with chestnut and rose wood highlights. Nice oak, vanilla and bourbon notes accompanying raisin, fig, plum, caramel, maple, and molasses. Sticky but delicious!

Aroma of rye, brown sugar, and vanilla, appearance like a normal barley wine, dark but still a little see-thru. Tastes like a fresh barley wine, despite being aged, little to no oxidation. Booziness shows through a little on the mouth feel, but not too much.

Pours deep mahogany with a thin tan head. Aroma has vanilla, alcohol, wood, caramel and spice. Taste is sweet and spicy with vanilla and some dark fruits. Medium bodied and somewhat sticky. Draft at the new tap room! Dark brown and a bit hazy. Cold brrrrrr. Major bourbon nose on this especially considering the temp. Taste is almost full on bourbon but hints of American strong ale are here. Thinnish body takes away some points here. Alcohol is present! On tap at Hungry Monk. Obnoxiously served in a chalice and predictably too cold. Pours mahogany with a surprisingly lasting oatmeal colored head. Smells of toasted coconut and vitamins. On tap in Scottsdale. Dark ruby red/brown with ring and lace. Plummy sweet vanilla and herbal aroma. Sweet dark fruit with vanilla notes and medium bitter fairly clean herbal hop finish. Medium full body. An excellent sipper. Complex with no off flavors.
