Draft at Coles. Dark brown body, small head, coffee nose. Coffee/chocolate body, moderate sweetness.

Dark dark brown with some head and nice lacing. Strong burnt coffee flavor dominates with a nice bitterness to the aftertaste. I quite enjoyed it with my chicken dinner!

Bottle from the Bavarian Inn at Frankenmoth. Pours brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is malty, a bit of roast, some grain. Body is on the lighter side with some toasted malt. Finishes dry and malty, on the lighter side, not bad.

draft- coffee chocalte dominate this brew. Not much in the aroma department, which detracts here. I find black lagers often fall short w aroma, but the flavor was nice so I was not that bothered about it. Would try again.

UPDATED: OCT 24, 2007 12 oz bottle - pours pretty dark brown with some amber highlights when held to the light. Faint aroma at first, but you do get some roasty chocolate notes after it warms, along with a treacly character. Flavour is chocolate, toffee, some coffee, and a decent amount of hops. Nice body for a dunkel, almost seems ale-like. I agree with swoopjones about the "burnt cigarette taste in finish". Pleasant overall, enjoyable.

Goblincat (399) - Petersburg, Michigan, USA - APR 26, 2010
Pours dark as expected. The taste is a bit strong with coffee, with malt undertones. A worthwhile attempt, but not awe inspiring.

UnsofistaCat (241) - Garden City, Michigan, USA - SEP 21, 2008
Very smooth and not very carbonated. Dark with out much of head. Little roasty and a little chocolate. I liked it.

sleestak (226) - Williamston, Michigan, USA - SEP 13, 2008
Bottle. The pour is dark mahogany brown with a thin white lacy head. Aroma is cocoa, coffee and roasty malt. Flavor is similar, but with a bitter grainy finish that’s not entirely pleasant. (As mentioned below, definitely very ashy.) Body is a little watery. All around "meh" with this one.

qdog (201) - Cleveland, Mississippi, USA - DEC 9, 2004
Draught, brown with red tones, minimal white head, average lacing, slightly floral aroma, taste of coffee and caramel, bitter finish.

biggenius29 (155) - Hamilton, Michigan, USA - SEP 25, 2007
12 oz bottle poured into a lager glass. Pours dark brown, almost black with a average size light brown fizzy head that shrinks a little but leaving fair lacing. The aroma is of molasses also with a metallic aroma. Taking a drink the flavor is of molasses up front, followed by a slight metallic taste which leads up to a slightly bitter finish in the end. The body is light to medium with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Overall I am not to impressed. The flavor is real nice, but once you get the metallic finish it is not to enjoyable.
