Pours a dark brown colour with a very small head. Aroma is nice, plenty of nutty character, some caramel and roasted malt. Flavour was incredible smooth and biscuity. Thought it might be a heavier amber first, but now by the description it makes sense that it’s more of an Alt. Rich and balanced, soft little hop finish. Draft at the brewery. Pours a thin head over a clear, medium brown (SRM 15) body....nose is of medium malts, with a bit of toffee, slight bread.....taste is primarily mild roast, with caramel, primarily toward the finish and lingering thereafter.....medium mouth feel. On tap at Free State during the 20th anniversary. Pours a clear and see through copper red body with an average sized, smooth looking, off-white head that dissipated slowly and remained nicely laced. Aroma is a caramel-rose maltiness. Flowery smoothness with a biscuity smell as well. A bit of earthy molasses in there too. Flavor is malty. More of that biscuit malt and molasses taste. Light amount of bitterness and a creamy nuttiness. Slightly citrus in the aftertaste, but mainly a hazelnutty linger. More and more hazelnut flavor is coming through as this warms up too. Palate is medium bodied and exceptionally smooth. Very clean throughout with a nice balance of flavor. Overall, not the most flavorful or complex beer out there, but a very nice tasting beer for the style. Great balance from beginning to end as well. Another impressive brew from Free State. Growler courtesy of theisti, Pours mahogany with a thin but determined withe head. Smells of caramel, light spice, roses, some sugary hints, earthy. Tastes of spice, pepper, earthy, tea, some citrus, caramel. Finishes with a light earthiness. Enjoyable session beer.
