12floz bottle with a BBD 05.31.2017 imprinted on the neck. Looks about as amazing as a beer can get. A one-finger head settles to a frothy half-finger leaving webs as the dark-copper body lowers with each drink. Smells good too, consisting of toasted caramel and mossy earthiness. This is carries through in the easy going palate. An excellent American altbier/amber ale as it is a very well composed malt centric ale. Dansting (222) - Overland Park, Kansas, USA - JUL 20, 2004
UPDATED: MAY 8, 2005 Excellent altbier. Malty aroma and flavor, with nice, rich reddish-brown color. Nice aftertaste to go along with initial terrific flavor. tybee199 (13) - USA - OCT 1, 2001
A nice beer, and a good representation of its Alt style. Malty with some subtle hop balance, and a rich brownish color (without a doubt one of the best looking Free State brews). While not my favorite Free State brew, it’s easy- drinking (goes great with chili), and always a ’go to’ beer when nothing else on the menu grabs my attention. psychpunk99 (13) - California, USA - JUL 1, 2002
Easy drinking---crisp and clean. A good beginning beer for those new to microbrews. Kevin (2199) - Montana, USA - OCT 26, 2005

I love a good Altbier. Definitely a pleasant surprise from KS. Picked up a six pack.
L: Clear amber with nice white head.
S: Malty and yeasty.
T: Balanced. Malt edge with nice aftertaste.
F: Medium and smooth.
O: Would have again. Great with food (pizza) or without. Braudog (6674) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - DEC 28, 2004
At the brewpub ... Dark red-copper with an adhesive side. Sweet malts and light caramels. Minor bittering finish. Good copper-ale style. jcnielsen (3403) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - NOV 23, 2012
On tap at Free State. Pours an amber color with white head. Malty sweet, bready/biscuit, caramel flavors. My favorite of Free State’s regular line-up. Very tasty altbier. Quetzolcotl (26) - - MAY 18, 2015
I think this is actually an Alt Bier, not a brown ale. This will seem more like an American Amber because it has good hop presence and taste. It is a lot better than what I was expecting and well worth a try. cb (810) - Roeland Park, Kansas, USA - JAN 20, 2003
One of Free State's most drinkable beers, I waited until I tried it at the brewery (vs. a keg) to rate and am glad I did. After a bit, the spicy hops overwhelmed my palate. In moderation, this beer would be great accompanying a light meal or appetizers.
