Good dark colour with plenty of aromatics. The rye is definitely there on the front of the palate, but the hops is so overpowering it doesn’t really show up in the main flavour profile, like in Boulevards rye on rye.
On draft at the brewpub. Roasty, softly spicy aroma, some milky chocolate, faint coffee, smoke and citric, leafy hop tones. Dark brown, nearly black in color, while the tan head is fine and lasting, also features some very nice lacing. Flavor profile is full of spicy, lightly nutty rye, dark, mildly roasty malts, lots of resinous, leafy, juicy hops, but only light-moderate bitterness. Some lingering malt roast, spicy, grainy rye and chocolate late. Plenty of fine effervescence, with a fairly dry mouthfeel and medium body. This is stangely good. Coconut is not what I would’ve identified its flavor or aroma as, but there is a milky sweetness to this that I wouldn’t have expected in a dark rye beer. None of the spicyness I expected either. RobertDale (6565) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - JAN 19, 2013

10 oz draft pour at the Brewpub in Lawrence, Kansas. The pour is a brown copper, mostly clear, with a light tan head. Nice lacing coats the glass as the beer drinks down. The aroma is a soft roast malt, spice notes from the the rye, and orange citrus and pine hops. The taste is a nice balance between the lightly roast malt, managed sweetness, the spiced rye and the citrus and pine hop character. The palate is medium bodied with a nice soft natural carbonation, and a lingering round sweetness, along with a bit of the roast. Nice one, Free State always knows how to use Rye.

Pours a deep brown with amber notes and a medium bubbly light tan head. Aroma of citrusy and piney hop notes, caramel and chocolate. Flavor of piney, citrus and coconut notes. Also getting chocolate and caramel from the malt. Interesting hop profile and the coconut notes are def there which play well with the malt bill on this beer.
