On draft at the brewpub. Spicy, estery aroma, plenty of yeast character up front with notes of licorice, black cherry, pepper, toffee and raisin -- a rather odd melange overall. Murky copper-brown color, with a lasting, fine head and lacing. Flavor is oddly sweet, tart, spicy, tangy and fruity, more licorice and spice here, some dried fruit, root beer, vanilla and cotton candy as well. A bit syrupy on the palate and low in effervescence. Just...weird. I can’t really say I was a fan. RobertDale (6477) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - APR 14, 2013
On tap at the brewpub. Comes a darker gold with a small white head. Aroma of yeast, malt, and spice. Taste is similar, but very spicy. Not sure about this one. ads135 (4607) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - APR 13, 2013
Certainly not the best Free State beer, but this is certainly a step above the Coeur de Saison. A tad bit richer, somewhat more sweet, and more generally drinkable than the original. beastiefan2k (3981) - HdG (past: NYC, KS, Rain City), Maryland, USA - APR 11, 2013
10oz tulip at the brewpub. I think Free State is great but this is about the worst beer I have ever drank from them. While drinking it I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I came up with bug spray or just overly phenolicy. Now that I read the description maybe it was horribly spiced even though I would enjoy these spices (not sure exactly what Black Tellicherry Pepper is). Something was seriously amiss about this beer. Could not even drink half the 10z glass.
