This Baltic-Style Porter marries the chocolate character of an English Porter with the strength more typical of an Imperial Stout. The lager yeast employed lends a smoothness and neutrality not typically seen in a Porter. Named for the Battle of Black Jack between John Browns men and the pro-slavery forces of Henry C. Pate in a Black Jack oak grove near Baldwin City in 1856.

From a growler - Poured black, opaque, two inch tan head that receded fairly quick but left a little foamy lacing. The aroma was light but pleasant with chocolate coffee and dark roasted malts noticeable. Flavor followed the aroma with the chocolate a little more prominent. It was pretty evenly balanced, not too sweet but not much noticeable bitterness. It had a full body and a nice creamy texture with soft carbonation.

On tap @ Free State Brewery. A dark black with a bubbly ran head with tons of lacing. The aroma is toasted malts with bits of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is like a toned-down imperial stout, with malt and coffee up front, and a smooth chocolate and bourbon aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Shaker pint at the brewpub consumed today. This is a damn good porter. Its strong but no trace of alcohol. Hops are low and not interfering with the porter. There is a slight prune character but no heavy handed ash or bitterness. Its hard to say what is present but easy to pick out what over the top characteristics are absent, which is what makes this a damn good porter.

64oz growler courtesy of mreusch, thanks a ton for this want list rarity! pours thick dense, opaque brown with a medium brown head that has some late rising bubbles. a lot od roast in this one, the nose is predominantly roast, bitter cocoa, and sweet licorice. there are hints of hops, oak, and slightly earthy yeast as well. the taste starts much the same, a ton of roast, but in the finish and aftertaste the oak comes through a lot more, and the hops a bit more as well. it leaves a spicy, earthy aftertaste with hidden notes of caramel and vanilla under the roast. the mouthfeel is creamy and medium, would do a world of good if it was a bit thicker. a nice offering, glad i got a hold of this!

Growler courtesy of Beastiefan2k, thanks Eugene. Poured a clear dark brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of carmel, roastiness, coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of coffee, carmel, roastiness, vanilla and light chocolate with a smooth lingering roasty bitter finish.
