Our special winter offering for 2006, this Pilsner style lagers strength elevates it to Imperial status. Where a typical German style Pilsner might reach an OG of 13-14P and 40 IBUs, our Imperial Pils logs in at nearly 18 OG and 62 IBUs. The Malt bill is almost entirely Pilsner malt with a touch of dextrin malt for extra body and mouthfeel. The hops are domestic Glacier and Sterling, both varieties that we havent used much before. The Glaciers add a clean bitterness to balance the malt and the Sterlings add a wonderfully complex hop flavor and aroma from late additions to the kettle and dry hopping as well. O.G. 17.8/1071. Hops 62 IBUs

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear golden color with white head. Grainy, earthy, noble hops and some alcohol, but the alcohol comes through nicely. Nice imperial pils.

Well rounded pilsner with pretty good Orange yellow colour. Though the flavour is not amazing, it performs well within the pilsner style, with the light malty followed by hops. The bittering hops leaves a strong bitterness on the back of the tongue, but the smooth mouth feel helps balance the strong texture.

Pours a mostly translucent golden with amber notes and a medium bubbly/creamy off white head that laced. Aroma of Cheerios with a touch of sugar and lightly spicy noble hops and citrus notes. Flavor of spicy and herbal noble hops, nice and dry, crisp with a touch of cereal grains. Pushing 8% but still so dry. Was afraid it was going to be a sweet malt bomb and its not!

Sampled at St. Louis Microfest 2011 - Pours clear yellow with a white head. The aroma has lots of grass, breadiness and sweet barely toasted malt. Medium body with fairly soft carbonation. The taste has sweet malt and lots of grassiness and spice. Good for the style.

Sample from a bottle at St. Louis Microfest 2011. Pours a mostly clear yellow-gold color with a big, foamy white head that settles quickly. Fairly light aroma of pale malts, straw, grassy hops, minerals, sweet bread, and sugar. Flavor of sweet and pale malts, straw, honey, corn flakes, and dough. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, chewy mouthfeel. Not a bad take on the style but this style has never worked wonders for me.

On tap @ Free State. Yellow orange appearance. Bittering Saaz hops in the nose. Quite sweet but fairly smooth pils flavor.

Had on tap at the brewpub while visiting the university. More hoppy than impy - disappointing, but drinkable and tasty.

Tap @ the brewpub. Pours a completely clear dark golden color with a small but strong head. Aroma has a bit of that pilsner crispness but the alcohol overtakes it. It also has some heavy citrus hop notes. Taste has some more grassy hops coming through and a heavier pils crispiness. But otherwise, for an "Imperial" its pretty easy drinking.

On tap at Free State during the 20th anniversary. Pours a crystal clear, pale yellow body with some rising carbonation. Big, fluffy, cloud white head that dissipates slowly and remains very lacy. Nice looking pils. Aroma is pretty bland. Some pale maltiness, a hint of straw hops, and a bit of a sugary sweet backing. Flavor is very sweet and malty. Very light amount of straw hops throughout as well as in the aftertaste. Some caramel in there too. Palate is light to medium and a little chewy. Overall, Ive never really been a huge fan of the imperial pils. I think a pils is meant to be light, crisp, and refreshing. The imperial-ness seems to take away from the style. I guess what Im saying is that this is a solid beer, but the style isnt one of my favorites. I definitely appreciate the brewpubs attempt, however.
