3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a deep brown with amber notes and a large foamy light tan head. Aroma of caramel, peanuts, milk chocolate and molasses. Flavor of caramel malt, almonds, light brown sugar, some spicy hop notes.
Pretty mild brown ale. I'm generally a fan of the stronger brown ales, but as a sessionable brown, this was tasty. Chocolate, has some brown sugar, some bready finish. Tried for the first time at the brewery back in 2007. unclemike (3170) - Junction City Kansas, Kansas, USA - MAY 7, 2015
Brown color with a red tint. Cream colored head that left foam on the sides of the glass. Chocolate malt aroma with sourish notes. Malty, lactic/sour notes, little or no hop character. Nice mouthfeel. Nsanders (1162) - St Paul, Minnesota, USA - APR 6, 2015
Tap at Old Chicago, Olathe. Dark red brown with a thin off white head and moderate lacing. Big roasted malt aroma, cereal, mild coffee and a little nutty. Flavor is dryly sweet with a chalky aftertaste. Body is lighter with a fizzy feel. RobertDale (6755) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - JAN 11, 2013
On tap at the brewery. Comes dark brown with a small biege head. Aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, chocolate, and a bit of vanilla. Kind of sweet, but easy to drink. Nice.

Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a dark, amber-tinted brown with a small beige head. Aroma of toasted and caramel malts, brown sugar-tosted nuts, vanilla, and chocolate. The flavor hits pretty much all the same notes, getting sweeter as it warms. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, sweet mouthfeel. Good brown ale, and of course they had to name it John Brown Ale- love that part. jrodooo5 (1703) - DOVER, Delaware, USA - JAN 15, 2012
Pours a dark brown with a very malty aroma. Taste is slightly bland with not much going on flavor wise. It’s ok. It’s sessionable but nothing in this beer stands out to me. Not bad but I probably wouldn’t buy it again. SudsMcDuff (8468) - .....Manchester United.........., Texas, USA - AUG 1, 2011
