"As long as I am an American citizen and American blood runs in these veins, I shall hold myself at liberty to speak, to write, and to publish whatever I please on any subject." An early abolitionist, champion of free speech and newspaper publisher, Elijah P. Lovejoy took his own words to heart and died living up to them. On three occasions, his printing press was destroyed by pro-slavery factions who wanted to stop his publishing of abolitionist views. In November of 1837 a pro-slavery mob convened on Lovejoys fourth printing press in Alton, Illinois with the intention of destroying it by fire. When Lovejoy attempted to intervene he was shot five times with a shotgun and died on the spot. Subsequently, Lovejoy was hailed as a martyr by the abolitionist movement. In response to the murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy, John Brown publicly vowed: Here, before God, in the presence of these witnesses, from this time, I consecrate my life to the destruction of slavery! History lesson aside, this flavorful IPA borrows much of its malt bill from the Homestead IPA. It departs from that beer in its uniquely American hop presence. Hopped with massive amounts of Centennial hops in flavor, aroma, and dry hop additions, Lovejoy IPA is a medium bodied, dark straw hop monster. The citrus character of Centennial hops can be best described as tropical fruit (a la Juicy Fruit). The fruity qualities marry with the clean maltiness and hint of sweetness provided by ethanol in this hefty IPA.

Draft from squealer. Aroma of fruity, citric hops and lightly toasty, pale malt sweetness with notes of grapefruit, tangerine, herbal spice and pepper. Mostly clear light-medium copper in color with a fine, lasting, off-white head and lacing to match. Flavor profile is sweeter and maltier up front, followed by a moderate dosage of hop bitterness and finishing with a burst of tropical fruit hop character and spice, the lingering hop oils resinous and drying. Smooth and moderate to low in effervescence on the palate, body is medium-full. Very drinkable and tasty, overall.

10oz pour at the brewpub. Pours a translucent copper orange amber color with a strong head. The beer is basically fruit hop, not super strong, some citric and tea hop flavors. Tea is stronger in the flavor. Some lightly toasted but felt maltiness. Fun beer.

Draft in a sampler at the brewpub. Pours a semi-cloudy amber color with a finger of off-white head that stays for a while. The aroma has notes of tropical and citrus fruits, piney hops, sweet malts, and straw. The flavor has a lot of tropical and citrus fruits as well, with pine resin, caramel and pale malts, and grass. Light-medium bodied, with a juicy mouthfeel that has a nice complement of bitterness and malt throughout. Nice IPA, the best I had at Free State.

Draft. Candy, citrus, a bit earthy. Toffee & medium caramel balance out the somewhat dank, fermented citrus and resinous hop character. Well attenuated and easy to drink.
