On tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a thin creamy head that laces nicely. On the nose are roast, chocolate, nuts and citric hops; an interesting blend. Light to medium-bodied and oily with a slick transition to a roasted and mildly bitter finish. Medium roasted malt, nuts and light chocolate with moderately earthy and citric hops at the lingering finish. This is a nice porter, one that I’d recommend it to any fan of the style. tjthresh (1872) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - JAN 26, 2007
On tap at the brewpub. Brown in color with a tan head. Nice chocolate and citrus aroma. Same with the flavor. Sort of thin palate. Really a nice beer. Could have drank several pints. csbosox (1229) - Prairie Village, Kansas, USA - APR 2, 2005
The beers at Free State change. The beer I had today was different than the beer Indra had in 2001 and is probably closer to the beer cb and grant had in 2003. This beer just went on tap recently and I loved it. On to the review. Dark brown with reddish tints. Aroma is hoppy! The hops seem to be citrusy, they smell great. The taste is roasted malt -> hops flavor. The hops flavor lingers with a slight bitterness. Nice finish. Mouthfeel is nice, about right for a porter. I kinda think they got it right here. I like hoppy porters, this isn’t by any means a super hopped beer like a Alpha Klaus, but the hops really go weel with the malt. cb (810) - Roeland Park, Kansas, USA - JAN 20, 2003
A mediocre offering from FS. Not bitter, but sour. A citrus flavor overwhelmed everything else good about this beer, except the aroma which was the consummate coffee/chocolate. I don't think I'll be getting this one again. grant (842) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - JAN 20, 2003
This is an oddball beer: not really a porter at all. At first "sip," one tastes the maltiness expected in a porter. Then the hops hit you. This is, first off, definitely overhopped to be a "porter." This is not really a problem; I like dry, hoppy porters if they're done right. It just doesn't seem to come together in this beer. The aroma is GRAPEFRUIT, the flavor is GRAPEFRUIT. It seems like they used a lot of one kind of hop. Body and mouthfeel is a bit thin, although the appearance is quite satisfactory. It's an alright beer, but not nearly as good as Free State is capable of producing.

Very chocolatey aroma. Filtered; very dark red-brown. Somewhat minimal head and carbonation. Very nice roasty chocolatey, coffeeish flavors, with a somewhat chewy mouthfeel. Aftertaste is roasty as well, with the hop flavors being pushed way to the back. I kind of wish more hops were there to give it a more interesting character, but it's smooth. Good porter.
