Another excellent Free State brew. The batch I had was hopped with Simcoe, which gave it a very distinctive aroma and flavor. Great bouquet, nice color, nice bitterness (50 IBU). Perhaps a tad too reminiscent of Free State’s Hop jack Ale, but I still dig it. A lot.
Thanks to hopdog for sharing this from a growler he got in a trade with mreusch. Pours a lightly hazy golden orange with a bubbly/creamy off white head that left some lacing. Aroma of cereal grains, floral and citrus hops, bready and hints of iced tea. Growler acquired in trade with mreusch (thanks!). Poured a medium and hazy orangish color with a smaller sized white head. Aromas of citrus, floral, tea, and lightly spicey. On tap at the brewpub. Suprised by the lack of aroma in this beer. The flavor was, for me, better balanced than the Copperhead I had just prior. Tap @ FS, pours a clear golden with a slight amber tint, nice white head and good lacing. Hoppy aroma is pine/resin, grass, citrus, and slight lemon. Flavor is a nice bite that lingers, with more fresh hops, and a lively palate. Another well done IPA from FS; well received on a hot and muggy summer evening. Draft (Styrian Goldings version): Light golden color. Sticky, finely layered bright white foam wisp. Toasted malt husk, peppery/minty hop aroma with apple hints. Silky carbonation. Moderately grainy. Brash hop textures clash with the buttery yeast. Overt huskiness wreaks havoc on the palate. Unbalanced with only a sparse amount of florally-juicy/honeysuckle Styrian traits. Ends dryly woody and coarsely earthy with dirty yeast flavors muddling the soft hop whispers. The mere trace of bright hop burps fails to offer any redemption. Good, but with Styrians being one of my favorite hops, this was a letdown.

O.G. 15.15/1061, 55IBU. On tap at the bar. Orange-gold color with a thin head. Nice lacing. Nice hoppy aroma. Citrus peels, some honey? notes. Taste is a nice, intially sweet malt base that get overtaken quickly by the hops. Resiny, piney hops flavor. Finish is dry, piney. Nice mouthfeel. Ths hops changed for this batch. UPDATED: JUL 28, 2007 Fruity, citrusy, hoppy aroma, with some light malt sweetness. Medium-dark golden color, hazy, with a lasting, creamy off-white head and plenty of lace. Flavor has some biscuity Pale malt flavor and a small amount of caramel sweetness, but overall the citrusy spicy, juicy hop flavors are most prominent, and features some pineapple and herbal tones underneath. This beer seems unfinished somehow, and is not nearly as good as Free State’s Copperhead Pale Ale (also an IPA). Bitter and malty enough for the supposed style (English IPA), but the hop aromas and flavors are prominently absent; the bitterness is the only aspect that really shines through. Not bad, but I’ve had much more complex IPA’s, from Free State alone.
