I guess this beer comes off as it was intended to, kind of a base for something special to be done to it. It looks well enough, very cloudy dark golden. Aroma is earthy yeast with a bit of moldy, musky (British malts almost) aspect to it. Taste is, a basic thick wheat ale. Its very grain-y for sure, like a wheat cereal. Draft at the brewery. Pleasantly soft, grainy, wheaty malt aroma, with just a touch of honeyish sweetness, mildly spicy, herbal hop character and a touch of doughy yeast. Cloudy light golden color, head is white and fast-fading. Pleasantly mild flavor, with more cereal-like wheat and grains, faint sweetness, mild hop bitterness and bready/doughy yeast, along with some late herbal, citric and banana tones. 12 oz draft at the brewpub during the 20th Anniversary of Free State celebration. Pour is hazed golden orange with not much of a head. Despite this, there is some nice white lacing as the beer falls. Aroma of not much, some wheat, maybe some light earthy yeastiness. Taste is tart sour wheat, with some residual waxiness near the finish. The aftertaste has some floral hop spice bitter thing going on which was nice. Palate is thin to medium, which led to this being a nicely drinkable beer. Overall, nice straight forward wheat ale. Draft: Lightly hazy lemon. Dwindling head recedes, but holds a dense wisp well. Soft aroma of doughy yeast, clove, oranges, and bananas. Straw and pine suggestions. Light bodied and loosely carbonated. Well-integrated spicy clove esters and floral hop flavors with deepening touches of apple skin acidity. Tangy fermented wheat note along with trace dried banana and doughy yeast cushion the acidity by coating the mouth. Dryly yeasty and lightly sugary, remaining thin in body. Finishes with tingly clove sensations before a trailing counterpoint of floral hops. Simplistic, but decent.

Wheat with banana esters. Light, fizzy, refreshing. Lemon and coriander undertones - subtle. Alcohol well-hidden, although the ABV was never specified. Lots of grain flavor - wheat, corn(flakes), oats and a touch of rye. Didn't look filtered; surprising as FS filters all of their beers. SledgeJr (3577) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - FEB 28, 2004
Just had this on tap at the brewery (2/20/04). This may be the best wheat beer that I've had at Free State. Looks just like the others, low lovibond rating, but this one seems to be a little more substantial in original gravity. I like it much better than the Crimsonberry.
