12 oz. bottle. Light copper with an foamy off white head. Aroma of pine, pine cleaner, citrus fruit, earthy dirt. Taste was bitter, pine, grapefruit rind, lasting bitterness. MetalNHopHead (2264) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - JAN 10, 2017
Free State makes some of the best IPA’s in the Midwest. They make it look easy, but Winterfest is a thoughtful, well-constructed ale that demonstrates expertise. Pour is golden orange with a long-lasting white head. Spicy hop aroma that translates into a citrusy, resinous, grassy, floral, and semi-piney taste. This beer is hop-forward, but there’s a sturdy malt backbone that supports everything. Crisp feel and the texture is somewhat oily. It’s a Winter IPA that deserves a place alongside your gingerbread. On tap at the brewpub. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a thin white head. Aroma of light fruits, apple skins, floral hops, citrus. Flavor of citrus, orange rind, grapefruit, light fruits, bitter hops in the finish. Light, fruity, hoppy. Well done IPA.

12 oz draft at Waldo Pizza in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a clear copper orange with a frothy one inch white head. The aroma is tropical citrus, grapefruit, lightly resin, some floral and a bit of pine. The taste is the bright fresh tropical fruit hop, nice soft resin, pine all balanced with a nice cracker malt backbone. The palate is medium bodied with soft natural carbonation and a mineral resin finish. Nice. Gunfighter (5) - Kansas, USA - DEC 23, 2015 does not count
Have seen this beer available for a couple of years now in KS and decided to give it a go.
Appearance is a dark reddish gold. Poured out of a 12/oz bottle in a tulip glass.
Taste is a big blast of hops. Holy Moses there is no mistaking this is an IPA (and a half). Very citrusy and pleasant aroma to begin with. First sip unloads an enormous amount of flavor that centers around grapefruit and lemon. Finishes with some bitterness, but also a note of pine. It’s an IPA in every way that’s for sure!
Overall; a specific kind of craft beer drinker would love this beer. If you’re into IPA’s and nothing but the strongest IPA’s this is an excellent choice! I enjoyed the immense citrus and floral flavors that came through, but it was not without some bitterness biting me at the end. I give it a good rating for the flavor it packs, but be warned its no introductory IPA -- drink at your own risk!

Balanced. Citrusy. Not bitter. Spot on for the style. Who'd have thought Kansas could do so well b
This is most certainly true. bartzluke (598) - Oklahoma, USA - MAR 4, 2015
12 oz pour from bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Attractive looking beer. Good head, slowly fades, decent lacing. Nice carbonation, light amber in color. Good hops smell-- grapefruit, citrus, fruity. Good taste too. Fairly bitter, strong citrus, a little lime. Strong aftertaste. GranvilleTim (1857) - Granville, Illinois, USA - FEB 27, 2015
Thanks Bob! Amber pour with an off-white head. Aroma is a combo of fruity and spicy hops. Taste is spicy hops. Very vibrant and intense. Pine aftertaste and finish. Strong malt base. Nice lacing. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - FEB 17, 2015
Flight pour on tap at the brewery (Lawrence, KS). Pours a nice deeper glowing orange hue, near transparent with dulled winter sunset glow. A cakey offwhite head atop stays as a nice layer, good retention and lacing stick around well. Aromas are a bit spritzy, gentle citrus wafts into some soap, subtle florals and bread malts atop. Touches of gentle carmelized and subtle sweetness pokes through a sufficient hop bouquet. Initial is medium bodied, a touch of girth and caramel hit the palate quickly aided by a firmer handed hop character. Florals andsoap meet a dab of citrus, faint melon and some caramel. A bit thicker, some touches of sweetness poke in and out. A gentle waft of gumball, grapefruit and subtle tropical fruit grow a bit, firm bitterness presses on into the backend and finish. Dry, bitter, a bit of girth and some warming ABV hit the palate, displaying what I guess "Winter IPA" means. A dab of sweetness and a touch more girth are palpable in this offering but at the same time a reasoned and heavy handed hop character still keeps it in line with all the other hop forward offerings Free State is putting out. A bit darker and sweeter but still good stuff. EtTuCthulhu (1391) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - JAN 19, 2015
This beer pours a slightly hazy orange color with a small white head, and the aroma blends resiny and citrusy hops. The taste is slightly bitter, mildly sweet, and a touch sour with an aftertaste reminiscent of citrusy hops. The palate fuses a sticky texture, medium-light body, and an average carbonation.
