Draught @ Brewery: This one pours a crystal clear copper color. There was about a finger of off-white lacing that left a good deal of lacing. Good nose. There was a good whiff of citrus hops. Some grassy notes also. It has a nice taste. Good malt body, along with a good hop bite. Very smooth and well balanced. A very good IPA. seymour (2045) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - FEB 2, 2014
UPDATED: FEB 3, 2014 Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a nonic glass. Medium reddish amber colour with sudsy off-white foam, long-lasting with lace. Rich malty flavour with intensely resiny American hops (probably Columbus?) flavours and aromas: dank, grapefruit, black current. Light-medium body, average carbonation, lingering aftertaste. A very nice American IPA. So far, this and the Ironman stout are the only Free State beers I liked enough to consider buying again. mikem409 (2027) - bloomfield, Michigan, USA - JAN 15, 2013
bottle. pours amber fast fading head. slight grass and orange aroma. very bitter but not nuch hop flavor, MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - JAN 10, 2017
Free State makes some of the best IPA’s in the Midwest. They make it look easy, but Winterfest is a thoughtful, well-constructed ale that demonstrates expertise. Pour is golden orange with a long-lasting white head. Spicy hop aroma that translates into a citrusy, resinous, grassy, floral, and semi-piney taste. This beer is hop-forward, but there’s a sturdy malt backbone that supports everything. Crisp feel and the texture is somewhat oily. It’s a Winter IPA that deserves a place alongside your gingerbread.

Pours coppery with an off white head. Aroma is citrusy hop. Flavor is a nice balance of citrusy, fruity hop and caramel maltiness with a light lingering bitterness. GranvilleTim (1855) - Granville, Illinois, USA - FEB 27, 2015
Thanks Bob! Amber pour with an off-white head. Aroma is a combo of fruity and spicy hops. Taste is spicy hops. Very vibrant and intense. Pine aftertaste and finish. Strong malt base. Nice lacing. Finhead (1763) - OFallon, Illinois, USA - JAN 9, 2015
A hazy, orange-brown color with an off-white head. The aroma has a strong citrus with notes of orange rind and grapefruit. It has a medium body with slightly oily texture and lively carbonation. The taste is moderately bitter that continues to bite long into the finish. jmohno (1619) - Iowa, USA - NOV 21, 2014
Description is pretty spot on but color is a brilliantly clear light copper. Aroma is a clean citrus with slight tropical as described, some resiney hops. Orange notes. Nice strong fresh hop. Taste is hoppy with a fairly strong bitter, piney grapefruit like. Caramel malts-medium, fairly dry finish, light medium sweetness. Good hop aroma flavor and bitter for an ipa. Taste has a tad bit of old off-yeastyness to it however. Overall a pretty good standard ipa but not near a favorate. GJF (1520) - Mount Vernon, Iowa, USA - DEC 26, 2014
Bottle on Christmas day. A nice surprise. Good, citrus-dominant IPA. Nothing out of the ordinary, but well done.
