Very nice hoppy ale. Refreshing on a cold winter night. Nice nutty aroma, smooth IPA finish.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2013 Really nice winter IPA. Nice hoppiness without the astrigence of Sierra Nevada?s Celebration. Very, very drinkable. mhkmurals (12) - Kansas, USA - AUG 20, 2012
Fantastic fruity and floral nose. Pale amber in color, murky/hazy with visible particles of yeast floating though out (that does not bother me, it might turn off someone who wasn’t already into craft beer I guess), Low carbonation and had a thin head which dispersed quickly. Hops provide some bitterness and grapefruit notes, but are not at all overwhelming, and balanced well by the subtle malt backbone. Tastes a bit like Tallgrass 8-bit, but slightly less bitter. ads135 (4607) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - NOV 22, 2012
I love the aroma of galaxy hops. Tropical candies aroma with some citrus that comes through in the flavor as well. The taste is a bit too sweet in my opinion for an IPA, but its reddish brown appearance and medium body are very appealing. BOSSbrewer (2705) - Arkansas, USA - SEP 5, 2013
I'm not generally n IPA fan but this was a good one. Very under rated. Has at their tap room in Lawrence.

Aroma is pine, grapefruit and fresh yeast. The flavor is grapefruit, spruce, malts, citrus, mild fruit, not much sweetness and a rather dry/medium bitter finish. Jackolan (19) - - JUN 19, 2015
Balanced. Citrusy. Not bitter. Spot on for the style. Who'd have thought Kansas could do so well b
This is most certainly true. Gunfighter (5) - Kansas, USA - DEC 23, 2015 does not count
Have seen this beer available for a couple of years now in KS and decided to give it a go.
Appearance is a dark reddish gold. Poured out of a 12/oz bottle in a tulip glass.
Taste is a big blast of hops. Holy Moses there is no mistaking this is an IPA (and a half). Very citrusy and pleasant aroma to begin with. First sip unloads an enormous amount of flavor that centers around grapefruit and lemon. Finishes with some bitterness, but also a note of pine. It’s an IPA in every way that’s for sure!
Overall; a specific kind of craft beer drinker would love this beer. If you’re into IPA’s and nothing but the strongest IPA’s this is an excellent choice! I enjoyed the immense citrus and floral flavors that came through, but it was not without some bitterness biting me at the end. I give it a good rating for the flavor it packs, but be warned its no introductory IPA -- drink at your own risk! MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - JAN 10, 2017
Free State makes some of the best IPA’s in the Midwest. They make it look easy, but Winterfest is a thoughtful, well-constructed ale that demonstrates expertise. Pour is golden orange with a long-lasting white head. Spicy hop aroma that translates into a citrusy, resinous, grassy, floral, and semi-piney taste. This beer is hop-forward, but there’s a sturdy malt backbone that supports everything. Crisp feel and the texture is somewhat oily. It’s a Winter IPA that deserves a place alongside your gingerbread. Pours a deep, clear amber with moderate head, mostly diminishing. Very nice on the nose - citrus and pine with grapefruit being quite noticeable. Well-balanced IPA with a good, bitter finish. A great effort from the brewers at Free State - Prost!
