COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Legend has it that long ago, before the Aztecs, the god Quetz chose the Tadarida bat to care for and proliferate the fruit of Opuntia—the tuna, or prickly pear. Since then Fortuna Roja—the red-crested vanguard—has warded the little fruit from feasting predator insects and carried its pollen across countries and continents as the cacti have travelled from their source in ancient Tenochtitlan. This stunningly bright-hued beer is our homage to the efforts of the Fortuna Roja, its intense tartness curbed only by the fullness imparted by the tunas during its long torpor in oaken barrels. ¡VIVA FORTUNA ROJA! Ingredients: Pilsen & acidulated malts, raw wheat, flaked rye; Texas prickly pears; Perle hops; top-fermenting yeast; wild yeast & bacteria; natural, limestone-filtered, Edwards Aquifer H2O; love

Bottle courtesy of nimbleprop, thank you sir! Pours cloudy pink, scant off white head. Aroma of maraschino cherries, raspberries, dusty lemons, cotton candy. Taste has a sweet cherry candy start, then tart cherries, raspberries, hint of vanilla. Very tasty.

A: Pours a shockingly bright red/pink color with a finger of pink head. S: Wow, this is quite funky. A big bacterial character and a lot of prickly pear (the fruit added to this beer). Smells slightly tart/lactic with quite a lot of fruit. The nose is quite interesting, if nothing else. T: The flavor is surprisingly, and somewhat disappointingly, sweet. A big sweet, Jolly Rancher/candy flavor. There is a slight tartness to it, and a good prickly pear character. Lots of cactus, too, which I wasn’t really expecting. M: The body is medium with a moderate level of carbonation. D: This one wasn’t as good as Ananke, but still not bad. The addition of prickly pear was an interesting choice and made for a very different sour beer.

On tap at brewpub. Pours a cloudy ruby with medium frothy pink head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is sour fruit and vinegar. Thin mouthfeel with a sour fruit and oak with tart finish. A very impressive sour ale from Freetail.

Bottle shared by nimbleprop. Pours clear strawberry with a small, fizzy white head, short retention with no lacing. Aroma is watermelon, strawberry, wet grass, light straw malt and low hops. Flavor is fruity, seedy, grassy, light malt, low bitterness, lemon, and a dry finish. Light body, low warmth, and medium carbonation.

22oz bottle. Poured a reddish/pinkish tinged and hazy amberish color with a small sized off white head. I’ll be the odd man out, just something about this one that wasn’t my taste ... it wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t a huge stand out to me. Must be the pickles I was getting as I really don’t like pickles.

Bottle at a tasting at James’ place. Pours a beautiful ruby red grapefruit color, mostly clear, with a soft thin pink head. Soft fruit, berries, goji berry, light tartness. Lactic on the nose. Gently carbonated, lovely fuzzy berry notes, nice acid. Apparently there’s prickly pear in here. Nice. Great flavor, a wonderful amount of subtlety. Lingering acidity with a touch of funk. Absolutely beautiful. Like a wonderful imperial Berliner Weiss.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Lightly hazy, electric rose ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose is both fruity, acidic and funky – horse blanket, cherries and strawberries. Light to medium-bodied with intermediate carbonation. The flavor is sour and very sessionable. Fruity and nicely acidic – watermelon Jolly Rancher comes to mind. Finishes very tart, fruity, and then mildly dry. World class bottle of beer split with me by 50belair. Thanks, Matt!

GABF 2012. Multiples pours over the first two days. Pours a clear pink appearance with a pink head. Juicy watermelon jolly rancher aroma and flavor. Fairly tart, but this impeccably tasted like a fucking jolly rancher. Kind of cool.
