COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Freigeist Abraxas, it’s also inspired by the style Lichtenhainer, but this version is stronger (6% alc.) and contains more lactic sourness. Brewed until 2012 at Braustelle (375 ml bottle), from 2013 at Göller in Zeil (330 ml bottle).

Cloudy yellow pour with a thin white head. Pleasant aroma of smoke, wheat, citrus and mild sourness. The lactic sourness is more present in the flavor than in the aroma, it’s joined by smoke, citrus and wheat, the flavor is very sharp and refreshing. The body is bigger than what I expect from a Berliner Weisse, although it’s not too heavy, the texture is a bit oily and the carbonation is lively. This might not be the best of the style, but it’s definitely worth a try and I wouldn’t mind buying this again.

(Bottle) Hazy golden orange colour with foamy, white head. Malty, slightly sourish nose with notes of peaches, white bread, a touch of salt and a gentle smoke aroma. Malty, slightly tart taste with peaches, lemon, white bread, hay and a finish with a gentle smoke character and low bitterness. Medium body, dry. The combination of the light lactic tartness and the gentle smoke character is really interesting and makes the beer very refreshing. Nice one.

Very cloudy rust-red orange with a normal two-finger head. Smell is tart, salty. Taste is very smooth with no sourness at all. A bit like salted caramal with all the sweetness removed, not sure how else to explain it.

Aroma: smoked ham, light acid notes. Appearance: hazy golden color and thin white head. Taste: intensive smoked notes, light sourness, thin malty backbone, bonfire, semi-dry. Palate: low body and high carbonation, smoky finish. Overall: really nice lichtenhainer, should be probably a little bit more sour.

500ml bottle from LCBO. 6%alc./vol. Pours a deep gold colour with one finger of head. Aromas of smoked sausage and yeast. Taste matches the aroma with some sour notes. I guess it would be nice to have it with some german sausage and saurkraut at Oktoberfest...but other than that it’s nothing spectacular Reviewed on 10/10/2016

Such a strange beer. A medium smoke to the aroma. The flavor is both sour and smoky, a strange combination that is both enjoyable and off-putting. Just weird.

BOTTLE 50 CL. Dark golden with lots of floaties, ivory head. Gentle maltiness, a bit fruity, nice moderate smokiness. Similar taste - round malts, slight smoky spicy. Balanced and tame.

Maakun (5564) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - APR 8, 2017
Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Hazy golden with small white head. Some smoke, light malts, soft lactic notes, soft dried fruits, campfire, light ham. Nice balance between smoke, fruits, malt and soft lactic notes with coresponding light sweetness and sourness. Just medium bodied. Quite good for a smoked beer.

Bottle shared at samenscholing. Hazy golden with white head. Dry grains, light smoked sausage. Light sour, bitter and sweet, vaguely salty. Medium body and sandy feel, or maybe that’s my tongue after Maakun’s homebrew cider, quite alright.

Hazy peach to golden pour with a two finger, soapy, off white head. Aroma is smoke, crabapple, lactic tartness, hints of earthy leaves new moss, grass and spicy hops. Flavor is smoke, bread, sweet wheat, a faint hint of bubblegum, light perfumey, citrus and mineral notes. Medium body, slick to oily feel, light, blanketing, sharp carbonation, slick finish. Pretty tasty, I believe it’s the first I’ve had of the Lichtenhainer style, but it’s intrigued me enough to seek it out.

Visual: Pours clear golden orange with a lasting 1mm micro head, fast steady singular streams.

Nose: soft smoky burnt rubber (lvl-4)-pungency

Attack: crisp, bright sour-light smoky impression

Mid-palate: light tingly-fizzy-burpy, (lvl-4-sweetness), tangy-sour lemony, barley-wheat malt

Finish: tart wheat malt palate roughish, light smoky rubber exhale, residual grainy barley malt

Summary: A very interesting revived beer style with loads of texture and an appetizing flavour profile. I like that the smokiness is clean and doesn’t dominate the entire palate.
