The Ryehopper began as a fall seasonal and has now found its way into our regular line-up. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded maltines and a sharp earthy flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

Bottle. Amber body with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, caramel. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/sticky texture, lively carbonation. The sweet start carries through the finish. In fact, the sweetness could use some taming. Taste of citrus, grapefruit, pine, caramel.

Tasted on 9/7/11 from a bomber bottle purchased at Midtown. Pours clear amber with a thick off white head that slowly recedes to thick, even lace, leaving thick residue along the inside of the glass. The nose has some lightly spicy cereal malt, along with hints of chocolate, bread, and some green citrus hops. The flavor is spicy with the chocolate, cereal, and bread malt up front, moving to the lightly bitter green hops. The body is full with average carbonation and a long spicy rye and lightly bitter green hops finish.

Bomber courtesy of Strykzone. Thanks Dave. Pours a rich amber with a large beige head and good lacing. The nose is a big citrus hop aroma with the rye showing. Medium body. Flavor is rye first, with the floral and citrus hops leading to a bitter Finish. Rye works perfectly to get the beer some zip. Very nice.

French Broad Rye Hopper has a thin, off-white head, a brilliant orange, bubbly, mostly opaque appearance with some noticeable sediment chunks roiling about and a bit of a lacing sheen left behind on the glass. The aroma is odd- sharp, intense, acidic citrus and even an almost turned orange juice smell. Hop resin, sweetness, pepper, and bread are also detected. Taste is unusual, too- sharp, sweet, acidic citrus, peppery rye, white bread, and a bitterness that grows as one drinks through the bomber bottle. Mouthfeel is medium, and French Broad Rye Hopper finishes dry and tart. RJT

It pours a light amber with a large off white head. The head does disappear fairly quickly in which there is a fair amount of lacing. The is an aroma of rye and hops. The taste is dominated by the rye with a pleasant bitter blend of hops.
