Bottled. Deep ruby. Complex vinuous nose. Full bodied and deliciously malty with soft mouthfeel. Flowery, orangey and very bitter finish. A winner in my book! Ungstrup (37581) - Citizen of the universe, DENMARK - AUG 10, 2003
[Bottle conditioned] The aroma is sweet, malty with smoked notes. The color is brown and it has a fine but disappearing head. The flavor is strong, sweet with strong notes of roasted bread, roasted malt, and a little smoked malt. A great beer - great palate for 5.6% ABV. hughie (3996) - Bedford, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - AUG 5, 2005
Bottle conditioned at GBBF 2005. Very little head. Amber brown colour. Aroma was of malt, leather, chocolate and coffee. Doughy, bready sourness in the taste. Very dry finish. Makes a refreshing change after all those golden ales. DrBeer (862) - Solna Stockholm, SWEDEN - NOV 13, 2002
Raisin and sirup aroma.
Sweet flavor with fudgetones and a growing big bitterness. rauchbier (3890) - Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, ENGLAND - JUL 19, 2003
Bottle conditioned. Deep chestnut colour, good creamy white head and low condition. Good aromas of hops, roast barley and chocolate. Quite sweet flavours with the chocolate dominating at the start but the roast barley returns and lingers in the dry finish, along with a warming alcoholic kick.

UPDATED: JUN 2, 2005 Bottle conditioned, 500 ml. Trade with maeib. Dark reddish brown colour, slightly hazy, large to moderate head. Fine aroma of oak, leather and camphorwood, some roastiness, brown sugar and prunes too. Flavour is very malty and slightly spicy with a moderate roastiness, but first and foremost dominated by a pronounced hoppy bitterness from start to finish - it’s debatable whether they have overdone the Target hops here. Aftertaste is definitely astringent. Still, it’s nice to have a beer where the use of both malts and hops obviously has been generous. This is not a beer for the "Carlings Black Label" crowd! Thanks, maeib! thebeertourist (5189) - Oslo, NORWAY - AUG 7, 2008
Bottle. dark copper colour with a dense, creamy yellowish head. Complex chocolate aroma with hints of fruit and spices. Fruity flavours, even somewhat tart, take over with dry chocolate in the background. Full and smooth body. Delicious. RichardGretton (4770) - Leicestershire, ENGLAND - SEP 27, 2003
The appearance is a combination of a stout and porter with a coffee and bitter aroma. A very bitter and very dry flavour. Overall a very nice dry beer. leaparsons (10546) - Wigston, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - MAR 25, 2004
UPDATED: MAR 16, 2005 Toffee coloured with an off-white head. Aromas are smooth chocolate and peppery hops. Flavours are, again, smooth chocolate with a dry bitter finish. Some plain chocolate, too. Moreish and as chocolately as Youngs Double Choc Stout. bobinlondon (1295) - Harrow, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 8, 2008
Gravity cask at Ealing beer fest. Dark brown with an off-white head. Smells of good coffee but tastes of liquid chocalate! Good spicy bitter finish. Excellent!
