A hearty brew that is black as night with a strong roasted malt character and a full body. After its initial release in January 2010, our Imperial Stout was aged for a full year in Bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents hints vanilla and oak. This, combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for a smooth, wonderful taste experience. A hearty cellar beer. Very Limited Availability - 22oz Bottles and Draught. Black Gold was named one of "the best" barrel aged beers in the US by Mens Journal and took home a silver medal at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival in the Wood and Barrel Aged Strong beer category).

Prufrockstar's rating

UPDATED: OCT 24, 2015 Draft at Bigwood, 12/6/2012. [10 of 11]. From notes. Pours jet black, thin tan ring of head, leaves irregular lacing. Aroma/taste/overall impression is dominated by bourbon. Theres a lot of barrel here. Sweet, roasty, smooth, full-bodied. When compared side-by-side in a line-up with other great barrel-aged beers, it doesnt leave a big impression (which is probably unfair -- I expect Ill rate this again some time on its own terms).

2006 bottle. Big thanks to OldMrCrow for digging this one out of his cellar. Its fitting that Id forgotten Id rated this one before based on my previous deScription. Anyway, pours near black with a small ring of bubbles. Aroma of dark fruit, oxidation / old beer. Held up surprisingly well, in that it still feels like it has some soul, even if accompanied by a bit of cardboard. Reasonably dry, still has some bourbon to it, chocolate, slick texture with a nice alcohol burn. Interestingly, my notes indicate I rated this 7.5/4/8/4/14, so basically the same as the original rating (which Im going to let stand). Perhaps Im fair and consistent, or I havent grown at all in the last year, or perhaps its just a coincidence.

2006 bottle, again thanks to crow. Maybe Ive had a lot more bad old imperial stouts, or maybe this is a better bottle, but Im really digging this. Prob 4.0. This has aged admirably.

Hits you with an immediate chocolate front, then rolls into a chocolate-cherry middle. A bit thin, next the bourbon hits, and then thats all you get. Wild Turkey. Wild Turkey everywhere. Burning, mediocre Wild Turkey. Not that this overreliance on bourbon is bad, just a bit one-note. Hides the stouts weakness. Pretty good but overrated.

2012 vintage on draft at Falling Rock. GABF week 2016. Standard motor oil body. Excellent creamy beige head. Caramel, cocoa, sea salt and sweet tarts on the nose. Sweet chocolates, spicy black pepper, and floral coffees swirl together and clean up with a peppery and woody aftertaste, not unlike KBS. Very thin bodied, though, almost watery. That is fine because it is full of flavor and not filling. Excellent stuff if it reminds me of KBS.

Amazing. Jet black with mahogany edges, thin beige head. Aroma was cocoa, chocolate liqueur, bourbon. Super toasty and sweet, not as boozy as I expected and super balanced. Dry finish. Very well done guys.

Nose is oak, dark fruits (raisins), vanilla, chocolate, mild coffee, and quite a bit of bourbon. Moderately sweet, bitter taste mostly mirrors the aroma in terms of flavors. Theres a nice, woody tanginess to it. Loved it.
