Best by 17SEP12 Really surprised to see this beer from this brewery. Figured Widmer would have taken the front in the geography (and slaughtered the style). Pours a delicate light yellow with the slightest diaphanous overcast. Fleeting foam atypical of the style. Smells of wheat, co2, lemon must, hay and some hints of lactic acid. Light and crisp smelling. Lightly tart with a wheaty sweetness and finishing corn flavors. The tartness is upfront and surprisingly transient. The finish is longer than I had anticipated with grain and grass with a hint of dry tartness (like I just swallowed some plain yogurt). A little heavy for the style with moderate carb and a wet finish. Clocking in at 4%, this is on the low end for US Berliner’s, but the high end for Berlin. I like this version, although I’m guessing it isn’t natural lacto, nor is there any Brett, so the beer really does merit a "best by". Nonetheless, I’m not put out by the offering. Certainly worth the $5 I paid. Serving type: bottle 06-25-2012

Bottle (1P 6FL.OZ): Golden, clear and white head that dissipates quickly. Musty malt and yeast lees nose. It’s musty! No spoilage. Clean slightly citrus and moderately neutral. Very dry and sour palate. Low to no bitterness. Lime like citrus acidity. Slightly malty. No funky spoilage, clean and fresh. Like drinking a light dry white wine. Colombard or Semillon. Short light and simple but refreshing. Exotic compared to a big beer lager that’s slightly sweet and has no flavor. Maybe perfect for spicy Thai or Chinese food. Palate is much better than the nose. There is a house aroma that can be also seen in Mendocino and North Coast.

22oz bottle pours out a golden topped with a nice head. Nose is wheat lacto and some grass. Taste is as the nose with a nice malty and a touch of citrus.

22 ounce bottle
This was an excellent discovery at a local beer store. It isn’t often you find something like this on the shelves in Ohio. It might not age particularly well but so far seems to be good as new.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated golden base couples with bubbly head. Wheat, lemon rinds, and a slight dryness are not quite as sharp as a typical Berliner Weiss. Regardless it forms an inviting profile.

Flavor / Palate - Lemon crisp, sweet honey, and a delicate mouthfeel tease the palate. Fading fast it makes you grab for another pour immediately. Sessionable and pleasing this is a fine summer beer.

On tap, Green Dragon, Portland. Cloudy yellow, with a nice white head. Smells tart, lemony, with a wee bit of cheesy funk in the background. Taste is tart, citrusy, and lightly toasty as it warms.

Bottle; dark gold color with a white head. Aroma was tart and funky; wheaty. Flavor was not great. Yeasty and tarty. Had better of the style.

Bomber to tulip (shared by Brigadier). Looks good for the style; transparent golden light orange with white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells lightly tart, wheaty, and biscuity. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Okay, but mild for the style.

From 22oz bottle to chalice (closest thing I had to a bowl). Pour isabright yellow, thin white head that was very active and fizzy. Nose is almost non existent; bread, nut, light malt, even lighter hop notes. Taste is very light, mostly sweet. High carbonation that’s comparable to champagne. See what they’re going for here, not my style however.

Pours yellow with no head. Aroma of apples, funky malt, lacto. Taste is like an old malt note even though this Is fresh, apples and tart sour wheat. Very off, just strange.
