COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first beer in the Brewer’s Share Series is "Extra Special Barney" (ESB) and was developed by our lead brewer, Barney Brennan. According to Barney, his ESB was inspired by two things; a perfect beer moment and the aromatic highlight of the 2007 hop selection in Yakima, a US Challenger hop. As Barney puts it, "I was sitting on the deck at the brewery overlooking the river in the sunshine - drinking a perfectly balanced bitter - already looking forward to the second pint. It was one of those great beer moments. Hopefully, my ESB will make one of those moments for someone else with its five different specialty malts and this one very special hop. We made it entirely with US Challenger hops including a pound per barrel dry hop because we wanted to share the aromatic experience we had at the Hop Rub in Yakima with our customers."

Bottle. Pours a reddish copper with medium off-white head that lingers. Nice lacing. Aroma of sugared caramel. Flavor is pretty sweet and a bit syrupy, not much bitterness to speak of. Decent!

Bottle. Pours clear amber with beige head. Aroma is somewhat floral, fruit esters, hints of caramalized red apple. Flavor is much the same and very well balanced, subtle sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, solid brew but nothing I would buy again.

22 oz. bottle, shared with Poisoneddwarf- Pours hazy orange with a creamy two finger head that eventually reduces leaving a blanket and nice lace. Aroma is caramel malts, soapy, spice, fairly subdued. Taste is creamy, mellow, drinkable, caramel malts, but isn’t really blowing me away. Body is medium, creamy, carbonation is also medium. Overall good not great ESB, but not really my style either.

The pour is a clear, deep amber color and a moderate, off-white, pillowy, frothy head which is somewhat lasting and leaves, scattered, tight, frothy lace. The nose is very bready, toasty, caramelly, slight DMS, and faint raisin. The flavor is more earthy and minerally, still toasty, caramelly, and bready. The palate is lively, medium, and creamy. The finish is moderate, minerally, toasty, and drying slightly. Fairly standard ESB but richer and more in every sense. Almost bock-like in some senses, but still fitting the other aspects of the style. Not bad in any way but fairly bland and lacking originality.

(22oz bomber) clear amber with off-white/tan edge bubbles. Nose of citrus/earthy hops, orange pulp, caramel, brown sugar, smells pretty good. Taste of caramel, bit earthy/English hops, herbal and even can taste the alcohol. Linger on the palate is pretty nice, not a bad ESB but very different for the style.

Bottled. Thanks to adnielsen for the bottle. Pours an orange color with a white head. Aromas of bread, caramel, and earthy hops. Malty, caramel, and earthy flavors. Pretty good for a esb.

The aroma is malty and a touch nutty with herbal hops and a tiny bit of fruit. The appearance is amber with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma with a bit of butterscotch. The palate is smooth. Overall a very good beer.

Bottle @ home. Clear, burnt orange appearance with a cream colored head. Toasty toffee, grassy, straw, a touch citrusy aroma. Rich toffee malty, orange/lemon citrusy, toasty, bitter, lightly woody, hay flavor. Alright but I prefer Bridgeport ESB.

poisoneddwarf (2688) - Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, USA - FEB 25, 2012
Bomber, thanks brenn79. Pours hazy orange with a medium dissipating beige head. Aroma is fruity--apples definitely--cinnamon, wet river rock, caramel. Taste starts out sweet and finishes dry and bitter. Carbonation is average, body medium, carbonation a little creamy. Seems a little boring.

From a bottle poured an amber color with a fair amount of head. Light hoppy flavor with a quick finish.
