not a huge fan.....too carbonated for an strong ale....and the hoppy finish is kinda not so happy..... boomerbrew (147) - Texas, USA - JAN 9, 2010
12 oz bottle - Sweet malty aroma and flavor. Hoppy flavor with sweet bitter snap to the palate. Dark beer wtih small tan head. Pretty good overall. killjoy966 (677) - Washington, USA - NOV 4, 2010
6-pack from PCC. I thought I liked this beer more than it turns out I actually do. Pours a deep brown and smells slightly sour. There’s a tang in it that I find unpleasant, however it’s malty enough not to really bother me all that much. Pretty good bang for buck as far as ABV is concerned. Recommend BridgePort’s Ebenezer for something that tastes similar but better. dcschiller (2208) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - DEC 11, 2010
(12oz bottle) Pours brown with tan head. Aroma of cocoa, caramel, and some light citrus. Taste is bitter with a malt backbone. Light to medium bodied. Oily texture and bitter finish. Not bad. Shadallion (534) - Sacramento, California, USA - APR 22, 2001
This beer just doesn't do it for me. The ginger-nutmeg-allspice flavors seem unmelded, they just kind of hit your tongue with no semblance of craft. The beer is really too hoppy for this style as well. Continues this breweries schizo nature of putting out some really great brews (pale ale, barleywine, imperial porter) and some duds (this, amber ale, IPA).

This beer was kinda weird....reminded me of a schwarzbier. Very spicy and peppery hop taste to go with an annoying malt finish....something was lacking in this beer. grant (842) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - DEC 26, 2002
It's hard to imagine a beer looking much better than this. A shiny ruby/brown with a pillowy light tan head that lasts and lasts. The hops were interesting, indeed, but for having four different types of malts, this beer did not seem to have much malt complexity. Predominant flavors were of caramel, and especially black cherry. A bit like a fruitcake. Alcohol flavor is omnipresent. TheTsunami (162) - Arizona, USA - FEB 14, 2003
Deep red to brown color. Small white head. Aroma reminded me of my grandmother's cabbage rolls. Flavor started out strongly as grapefruit. That (surprisingly) faded very quickly. Mellowed out incredibly in the middle to a malty sweetnes and finished with only a slight bit of hop flavor. Very unique. Sham (1844) - Seattle, Washington, USA - NOV 9, 2003
Very dark pour with lighter brown edges. Big head and nice lace. Mostly sweet malts in the aroma, not too big of a nose, slight hops. Roast malts in the flavor, some fruit and finished off with a bit of bittering hops. Not too bad of a ESA. pinkzambia (2050) - Boise, Idaho, USA - JAN 5, 2006
Clear mahogany with a fluffy off-white head. The aromas is one of spicy malts along with hops - pretty balanced. Don’t be deceiced though! It has quite a bite for a winter brew (perhaps, it’s the hops I wasn’t expecting). I could taste the higher alcohol in it which I wished they would have done a better job disguising it. When it is all said and done, after the interestingly bitter taste, it leaves a sweet coating on the mouth. I didn’t really like this one.
