Bottle conditioned.
By the time it was released in 2008, this Brewer’s Reserve had spent 500 days in 30-year-old single malt casks. Brewed to 7.7% ABV, it is a strong ale with hop bitterness and tangy marmalade notes.

I bought a 50cm bottle at Jasons Food Market in the basement of the FE21 department store in Hsinchu, Taiwan. It had a dark chocolate brown color and left a beige, full cream color head with good lacing. It had a strong aroma of wood, thick malt and spice. It was obviously a full flavored beer with flavors of wood, dried fruit, and carmelized sugars, sweeter than expected. It had a stronger alcohol flavor than I expected given its 7.7% but perhaps that has to do with the whiskey barrel aging. A light bitter and hop finish. Not as complex as I expected but an excellent beer and one that I would gladly sample again.

50cl bottle that Derek was nice enough to get out for us after the class tour at the brewery. Dark brown color with a small beige head. Rich wood and scotch character going on. Sweet and fruity with smooth scotch in the flavor. Lightly boozy but very smooth on the whole. Quite good overall. A nice old ale with good scotch flavors integrated.

Cask. This may be an unfair rating because I tried this in a cask, which was drawn straight from the whiskey barrel, meaning there was a higher alcohol percentage before they diluted the brew. The pour was medium to dark golden with aromas of vanilla, oak, sourness, and malt. Flavors were similar with a bit of sourness and sweet oak coming through the sweet, but smooth malt character Nice brew with hints of caramel and biscuits throughout. The whiskey was also a nice addition.

Cask, BrewWharf, small sample. Dark licorish black colour, descent lacing, really intense aroma of whisky and oak, complex malt, really great malt balance in this strong beer, very bitter blend and a delicate balance against the whisky which i think is outstandingly crafted, whisky reminiscent of Glennfidditch, sublime oak finish, roasted malts, some definite tangy fruit in the mix which has dried out with the aging, a really fantastic beer. Thanks for this special treat at the London Brewers’ Alliance evening.

ClubGonzo (5670) - Bergen, NORWAY - JUL 26, 2010
Pours a dark-hued orange body with a medium, off-white top. Nice. Smell is caramel, licorice and toffee, with faint hints of whiskey. Taste is honey, butterscotch, malt, toffee and boozy tones of whiskey. Full-bodied. This is a well-made solid caramel-style English Strong Ale. Solid, but a bit too straightforward and boozy for the low ABV to achieve a top slot.
