This limited edition brew is a unique collaboration between brewery and beer writer. Melissa Cole brought her vast experience to the tasting table and helped us deliver a stout worth writing home about.

Brewed in the traditional style that became a favourite royal court, this limited edition Imperial Stout has been specially created as a single brew. In a unique addition to the historic recipe, the floral character of the Centennial hops is enhanced by the inclusion of rose buds, lending a hint of Turkish delight flavour to the beer. This Imperial Stout has a rich, dark appearance with strong chocolate and deep cherry notes which lead to a lighter, bitter finish.

500 ml boxed bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.

Looks: Clear deep blackish brown colour with a thin ring of yeast sediments; One finger head with crumpety beige foam which lasted for 90 seconds; Excellent sticky lacing with barely notable slight carbonation.

Aroma: Rich, fragrant and sweet strongly-roasted malt, with plum, strong caramel and toffee, cream, floral, dark chocolate, sugar, quite strong alcohol, yeast and light grass. Complex and subtle!

Taste: Strong sweet, strongly-roasted dark malt, with strong black coffee, dark chocolate, strong plums, strong burnt toast, strong caramel, soy sauce, sugar, strong alcohol, yeast, liquorice, strong lemon, strong bitter hops and sharp grass. Impressive!

Body: Medium body; Quite thin but slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Dark malt attack right away! Very strong and roasty, yet in a rather thin background. Complex taste starts with initially strong soy sauce, then the cream, sugar, strong booze and liquorices, followed by strong plums, burnt toast, lemony bitter hops, strong black coffee and caramel. Not much rose bud or oat’s smoothness. You can identify all the taste sequentially. The 10.7% booze is very well hidden, easy to go down with strong liquorice and no knock-on. Very nice!

Hoppiness: Floral and light grass in nose. Strong lemon and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is already strong and boosted by roasty malt’s burnt toast for a lasting, high astringent sweet-bitter finish.

After Taste: Slightly dry. Very roasty, sweet and malty to mouth.

Comments: When it comes to big beers, Fuller’s seems to do them majestically. With this RIS, its aroma and taste are intense and complex at all fronts, yet without going mind-blistering like the American craft brews. The best thing is that it can be subtle when it matters, namely the booze, citrusy hops, sweetness and even malt richness. It doesn’t hit me as much as North Coast’s Old Rasputin, but it’s definitely a classy RIS, and I love it!

Geweldige stout... dik olieachtig maar heel drinkbaar, aroma vol chocola koffie en gebrande mout en donker fruit, mooie balans...
