10-Apr-06 (18.6 oz bottle: $2.89 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Best before 03-Apr-05. Having just sampled an aged Arcadia London Porter, I just had to put it up against a similarly-aged Fullerís London Porter, even if it isnít bottle conditioned. Itís still sweet and wonderfully malty, but I noted a significant amount of chocolate when I tried this previously, and while still quite chocolaty, this is more raisiny and more earthy here, a plus in my book. Roast isnít dominating and bitterness is fairly mild actually, so this just really allows other flavors to shine. I really love that the smokiness emerges in the finish rather than just staying consistent right from the sip; adds complexity and more intrigue to the flavor this way. Sweet, fruity, malty, chocolaty, smoky aroma is excellent. Medium-full bodied and gently carbonated for an incredibly smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. Medium ruddy-brown with some transparency through the center of the glass. A full inch of creamy, light-tan head shows solid retention, taking several minutes to settle to a filmy layer. Considerable patchy and ringed lacing decorates the glass. This has to be one of the best porters available in the USA, and pasteurized or not, itís permanently in my top ten for the style.
06-Oct-04 (18.6 oz bottle) Very hearty and robust porter that boasts a strong chocolate flavor, lightly sweet, moderately roasted with a fair amount of bitterness and some smokiness in the finish. Big, chocolate nose makes for a grand introduction for this beer. Full bodied, with a creamy and smooth palate. Dark ruddy brown in color. Light tan head has good size after the pour and demonstrates excellent head retention with some modest lacing. (8, 4, 8, 5, 16 = 4.1)

Poured dark brown with minimal head. Aroma was roasted malt with a touch of coffee. Flavor was coffee, and a touch of chocolate, and slightly bitter in the finish. A pretty good brew.

Excellent porter. Very complex, dominated by chocolate, coffee, and roasted bitterness. Continues to develop in the finish. Great brew.

Bottle. Pours a black colour with a mediumthick tan head. Dry roasted aroma. Nice dry roasted flavor with hints of chocolate and coffee. Long dry roasted aftertaste.

Pours black with tan, light uneven head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and a bit of creaminess, although points are deducted for my personal gag reflex against somewhat bitter coffee aromas (its a long story, and an irrational one, lets leave it at that). First taste is kind of unimpressive - roastiness, coffee, chocolate. The finish is where it develops its quality. The finish sneaks up and has a very well developed roastiness and smokeyness to it that lasts quite a while. Would be absolutely delicious with a steak. All in all, pretty good, easy to drink, hearty, unimpressive to begin with but wins me over on the finish.

In a word, Awesome. Rich flavor with tastes of chocolate, malts, roastiness, and hops. Smooth to drink and hearty as well. One of my favorites.

Pours nicely into Tulip Pint. A taupe head forms richly and fades to a sheet above the dark beguiling brew. Roasted aromas on the nose quickly checked by sweet malt and earthy hops. Phenomenaly well balanced with a classic English malt structure. I know that no one really knows what Porter originally tasted like but in my mind this has got to be close. Not as hoppy as many American versions and certainly not as thick with roasted malt, apparently those beers are called stouts, which are a spin-off of Porter

UPDATED: APR 29, 2007 I was shocked when I tried this, this being one of the top rated poters. It was (gasp) weak!!! Even compared to some decent (not the best) American brews. It had a rich malt flavor, a tinge of sourness, sort of like an oktoberfest. There was a little bit of roast, a slight coffee/chocolate flavour. There wasnít much else. No noticeable hops, and generally not enough bitterness. The body was thick but not in a good way. I will not have this one again, and I fail to understand why others have rated it so highly. Overall this beer came across as too heavy and with a slightly unpleasant flavour.

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2008 Bottle. Pours brown\black with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, and slight hops to the nose. Flavor is sweet upfront, caramel, coffee-like, roast, with slight bitter finish. Good body, good brew.

Dark, opaque pour. Bubbly tan head. Aroma of malt and roasted coffee. Flavor of malt, chocolate, caramel, and toffee. Hop bitterness in the end, but not overpowering. Medium mouthfeel. Creamy and smooth going down.
