3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask at the Bishop on the Bridge, Winchester. Brilliant copper in colour with a thin translucent head; the taste is gently fruity, with underlying soft caramel; and then some spicy warmth to the biscuity finish. A rather plain and ordinary attempt at an autumn ale.

Half pint cask at the Churchill Arms, Kensington. Deep bronze colour. Small coarse off-white head. Nice malty aroma with hints of hazelnuts. Malty flavours as well with some caramel. Nicely balanced, but with more malts than hops. Nice, but not outstanding.

I don’t understand. Is it all about reputation? Personal taste aside this is clearly superior to other more highly rated beers, mammal based names or not. It’s not fantastic, but its still got tail. Pleasant.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
[Cask at General Havelock, High Wycombe] Amber-red with a moderate, lasting white head and a slight fizz. Caramel and toffee dominate, with a little stewed apple and some digestive biscuit. The earthy bitterness in the finish wasn’t quite enough to balance, leaving it rather sweet for me. Not one of Fullers’ better efforts.

bell inn, walsall. Red amber beer with small creamy head. Little aroma. Taste of roasted digestive biscuits with a little peppery bitterness. Quite creamy on the palate. An ok beer easy to drink.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask. Deep red color with a small tan head that disappears. The nose is of juicy cherries, light caramel, some sugary pastry. The taste is moderately sweet with a light bitter finish. The body’s medium, the finish somewhat watery and refreshing. A nice seasonal from fullers.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
First tasted this in Gabriels, Paisley in November 1998. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear vivid russet red in colour with a thick creamy white head. Heavy aroma of vanilla pods in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a digestive biscuit note in the mouth with creamy vanilla fudge present. Slight herbal tang of hop resins in the brief aftertaste. Finish is smooth and malty with creamy vanilla notes still present. An excellent Irish Red Ale in style and well recommended.
