Poured a copper color with a small white head and light lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, fruitiness, alcohol, and even a bit of port. Taste was more sweet caramel (as seems to be the trend with this vertical), spicy licorice, toffee, with light hops... light alcohol was present here as well. berkshirejohn (6662) - Bracknell, Berkshire, ENGLAND - JAN 5, 2008
Bottle #22128. Clear copper coloured with a thin off-white head; rich aroma of stewed fruits, apricots, raisins and prunes with traces of alcohol; body is quite thin with vinous flavours, chewy malt and warming alcohol; dry and warming finish. Smooth and exceptionally sippable. BBB63 (6567) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - SEP 16, 2011
Vertical tasting with 2001, 2008, 2009 and served in Fuller no--nik pint glass:jgb9348 (6484) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - DEC 17, 2004
App :Slightly hazy deep amber with mahogany highlights, small frothy head and some spotty lace. Aroma: Very heavy marzipan and crystal malt influence, grassy and noble hops, some minty and dill esters, a touch of lemongrass and heather, raisins and dates. You can almost smell an old wool sweater when approaching this beer.
The taste starts with heavy marzipan, prune, pear, bready and yeast. Unlike the great FVA of the past this never seems to go to another level. Almost one dimensional which I find almost shocking. Seems too sweet and bready versus that forceful noble hop character often found with these.
I was very happy to land a bottle of 2003 but now I tasted it, I would rather have many bottles of the easier to find 2009. This did not age nearly as well as 1998, 99, nor 2001. That makes me sad.
Bottle #27154:Cletus (6368) - Connecticut, USA - JUL 7, 2008
Clear amber coloured body with no head at all. Aroma of nice pit fruit, grapes and toffee. Medium-bodied; Nice full sweet taste with pit fruit and a good mild bitter malt flavour. Overall, a nice beer - a bit stronger and harsher than 2002, but still a damn good beer! I sampled this beer from a 50 cL bottle after the RB party at Founder’s in Alexandria, Virginia at Mike’s (the_beer_god) hotel room on 20-November-2004.
Pours copper with a thin white head. Smells of fruit, caramel, spice, citrus. Tastes resiny with some fruity hints and caramel. Finish yields some earthiness.

Bottled number 27154, courtesy of chris_o. Pours a nice copper body with a small whitish head. Nose is malty with alcohol notes, raisins and light caramel. Taste is big alcohol, rum soaked fruit, big malt and caramel. Body isn’t the thickest but has a nice warming feel to it. It works itself out. Finishes with more malts, more alcohol and caramel. Good beer, but I think another year would mellow this nicely. Rastacouere (6177) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 1, 2007

Comments: A smooth, caramelly, biscuity vintage with a surprisingly active carbonation still.
Red brown colour with a big off-white head. Malty fruity caramel aroma and a sweet dry malty fruity light hoppy taste. Medium to full body and a sweet light alcoholic finish. zacgillbanks (5507) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - AUG 21, 2014
Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Darlington. 2003: Drank 2014-08-21, Score 5. Aged for 11 years. A dark amber coloured beer that pours with a creamy foam head. It has burnt toffee, currants and warming rich red fruity flavours, spicy and peppery hops followed by liquorice, oak and leather and alcoholic warmth on the finish. Very Good indeed! duff (5486) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JUL 29, 2005
Bottle. Some madeira qualities. Nutty caramel/toffee flavours. Touchy of vanilla and wood, some citrus from the hops. NOt as complex as the 2002, but still nice all the same. Rich, yet smooth mouthfeel.
