COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed with North Carolina wheat and locally-farmed basil, our most popular summer beer is an ever-changing feast for the senses. Summer Basil evolves over its five-month season, as local basil matures and fermentation temperatures rise. The saison yeast loves our hot summers, responding with a full-on punch of peppery, vibrant flavors. It’s okay that this plow-to-pint beer doesn’t always taste the same. It’s a beautiful thing.
Availability: Summer, 22oz bombers at our tavern and select markets, including the Durham Farmer’s Market. 5% ABV.

Growler shared by Jay at Dutch’s. Pours a clear golden color with a small white head. The nose is nice with wheat, herbal notes, mild lemony citrus and grass. The flavor has toasted bread, grass, lemon citrus zest, herbal notes that show the basil in the finish. This was a decent summer drinker and worth trying. Consumed August 2012.

Tap at CK. Low haze, flat blond pour. Nose is lemon hand soap, sage, rosemary. Taste is soapy, sage, herbal, lemon. Palate lemony, refreshing, a bit mealy and chalky. I don’t mind these super herbal beers, but I reckon a good number of people would be thrown off by the lavender soap type nose and taste.

Draft. Murky pale yellow color, scant edge head. Aroma is very subtle spice. Taste is bitter straw and basil.

On tap at the brewery; I’ve also had it several other places in downtown Durham. I love basil and anything with basil in it, so I was really excited to try this one, and it did NOT disappoint. Pale golden coloring with a lacy off-white head. BIG basil note in the taste, and it lingers long after. A VERY refreshing summer beer; I can’t wait to have it again next year.

Growler shared by Jay. Poured clear golden color with an average fizzy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy spice and balanced aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium spice sweet flavor with a medium spice balanced finish of moderated duration. Refreshing complex beer.

Remainder of a growler, thanks to Jay. Totally murky faded yellow / peachy color. Thin white head, leaving dots of lace. Very light, but crisp carbonation. Clean dry finish. Very easy to drink, and refreshing, as a summer brew should be. Really nice basil spice aroma, adds to the tastiness of this brew. Light orange citrus peel aroma. Sort of a zesty sweet taste. Quaffable and delicious, all the way through. A great and interesting way to do a summer beer, especially if you enjoy basil like I do

Growler to snifter (thanks Jay). Looks solid; light-gold with thin white lacing. Smells pretty good too; saison-ey and basil. Tastes like it smells, but a little less pleasant. Average on the palate. Meh.

AMber in color, hazy with a thin head. Nice easy Basil aroma and flavor. Easy drinking ale.
