3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewery. Black with some light barely coming through the glass. Strong aroma and flavor of chocolate and banana, with a sweet finish. I’m a big fan of this one.
Had as Working Man’s Nudge. Taps opaque chocolate brown with a nice light tan head. Weak aroma offers a bit of toasted malt. Flavor, happily, is much stronger, featuring roast malt, caramel, biscuit and subtle toffee notes. Firm body delivers good fizz. Let’s do lunch, nudge nudge! charule (2302) - New York, New York, USA - FEB 20, 2016
Bottle thanks to OldStyleCubsFan. Poured black with off white head. Aroma sweet graham cracker wet roast barley. Light carb med bod. Taste sweet malty watery. hman43 (1894) - Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA - JAN 30, 2016
It pours dark brown with a light tan head. It has a sweet caramel aroma with nuttty elements, with chocolate and a some citrus hop elements as well. The citrus aromas are moderate in nature. The citrus flavors are prominent with the flavors of nuts. The are hints of caramel and chocolate flavors. The palate is bittersweet with some roast. I like the elements that are associated with this particular brew, but it resembles a cross between a black IPA and a brown ale more than brown ale. Appearance: Pours up a clear, dark-brown body with an inch of beige-colored foam.
Smell: Subtle chocolate, dry caramel and some slight, underlying nuttiness followed by some sourish bananas notes and a bit of phenolic cloves from the hefe yeast.
Taste: Flavors of light cocoa powder, caramel, toast and toasted nuts. Initial malty tastes give way to an undercurrent of green banana and (light) clove. A little showing of bitterness along the way. Things don’t particularly mesh well as you head into the drying, thinnish finish. With the brewery going for cola and Moon Pies, I can surmise the cola, but, Moon Pies? Not buyin’ it, guys.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, light leaning and even a tad watery. A hair over medium carbonation.
Overall: It did not win me over. For me, the selection of a hefe yeast, while different, wasn’t a welcome inclusion. Time to get back to work.
Draft - Pours dark brown tan head - nose/taste of chocolate, peanut butter, clove, caramel - medium body

650 ml. pours mostly clear deep brown with a thin film of foam. Nose is charred banana, charred grain and spicy espresso. Front tastes of sourish banana, vanilla and dry cocoa. Long finish has nearly burnt toast and earthy potato chip. Near-medium body has a smooth light-medium carbonation and a decent balance. I appreciate the experiment, but it needs more work. jhp40219 (449) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - JUL 6, 2015
Pours a soda brown with a small tan head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, banana, soda, bubble gum, and graham cracker. Taste is bittersweet chocolate, banana, bubble gum, clove, soda, dank citrus hops, graham cracker, biscuit, even a bit of marshmallow. Long malty finish. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation. Good but the yeast strain makes it a little odd. A bit too much banana and bubble gum flavor that throw the taste off. On draft on the outer banks in North Carolina it is a clear dark amber with a slight head the aroma is chocolate with vanilla and caramel. The taste begins bitter and evolves into a combination of malt flavor that stays on the palate Iphonephan (7476) - Jackson Hole/McLean, Virginia, USA - APR 25, 2015
On draft at Trio in Kill Devil Hills NC. Pours a clear deep amber with an ecru head. Nutty nose. Flavors of toast and a bit of tobacco with a feint hint of cocoa. Slight bitter finish. cutitoutdave (67) - - APR 12, 2015
Medium transparent brown with reasonable tan head on draft in Durham. Malty aroma with roasted component, hops. Malt taste is kinda thin but can appreciate burnt, roasted malt and biscuity notes. Significant hoppy and clove aftertaste which I didn’t care for. Medium body with average carbonation. A strange brew; couldn’t get on board with the hopping and cloves and the malt was too thin for me. Also by the book shouldn’t have a burnt/roasted flavor to call it a brown ale.
