A libertine is someone living free of society’s restraints. Similarly, The Libertine doesn’t constrain itself with preconceived notions of what a beer style should be. Loaded with malts that include the UK’s premium Maris Otter and Caramel 60, and topped off with Rye to impart a distinct reddish hue, the Libertine is a malt-dominated red ale like none you’ve ever had before. It boasts a rich, indulgent body without being overly sweet. Conventional classifications fail The Libertine, but who really wants to play by the rules anyway?

750ml bottle from khoffman43. Pours ruby red with minimal head. Nose is muted with toffee and caramel. Taste starts with bits of citrus, mid stream toffee enters stage left and continues to the quick finish. Body is a bit thin.

8 oz tulip draft at Rock and Brews in Overland Park, Kansas. The pour is murky brown copper with a thin tan head head. Splotchy lace on the glass. The aroma is raisin, toffee, maybe a hint of cherry sweetness. The taste is big sweet malt - toffee, raisin fruit, caramel, spice floral herbal, and a bit of roast behind. Alcohol is evident. The palate is medium to heavy bodied with soft carbonation and the sweet herbal lingering. Not really my thing.

On tap at Fulton. The '16. Pours deep amber with tan head. Scent is dark fruits and malt. Taste is prunes, malts, and molasses. Body is medium. A little more syrupy than the '15. An interesting style.

Minnesota Trip Beer #92. Keg at the brewery, 5/9/16. Clear dark red, thin creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of caramel, citrus, bits of coffee. The taste is caramel, toffee, Twizzler candy. Medium bodied.

ACHops (1688) - Seattle, Washington, USA - SEP 11, 2016
On tap @ Fulton. Pours hazy dark reddish amber with thin off-white head. Aroma is syrupy sweet, boozy roasty caramel malt. Taste is likewise - sugary sweet malt dominates, oaky and dry on the finish. Could use more hops for an imperial red. Creamy, rich mouthfeel. Hefty abv is evident throughout. Ok.

12oz bottle. Pretty a much a style I never desire, the Imperial Red. Cherry, vanilla, big amber malt notes, not enough hops to balance it out. The rye really oversweetens an already sweet beer. Very malt forward, pretty drinkable for the ABV. OK.

GJF (1520) - Mount Vernon, Iowa, USA - NOV 23, 2015
On tap at Luce. Shared a few with Kurt after the Dead show at Target Center. Deep, muddy ruby pour. Generally sweet. A bit of scotch ale to it with a touch of rye sharpness. Nice.

Sample in Sioux Falls. Clear ruby color, off white head. Aroma of caramel and molasses. Taste is malty with light spice. Nice.

Stine (1801) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - NOV 4, 2015
Fully dense reddened mahogany pour, no retention. Fig and cherry popsicle aroma while cold. Caramel, toffee, and aromas of leather and smoke emerge over time, and a brief blue cheese suggestion. Brown sugar and caramelized fruit sugars are the foundation of a cloying, simplistic flavor. Some dark tannin earthiness and a perfumey herb mixture playing off the alcohol are the only elements of intrigue here; fruit flavors that might develop some depth stay thin. Oily, deep palate with high carbonation. Not enough detail to the malt, or simply too much malt sugar overall, depending on what style this should most closely adhere to.

Good Red Ale from MPLS. Overall a very solid beer, good with food and on it’s own.

edgallow (4618) - nashville, Tennessee, USA - JUN 3, 2015
Draft pours Amber with a off white head. Aroma of malts, fruit and some floral notes. Taste is malty with some sweet caramel
