COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Imperial Stout is about drawing a line in the sand. It has a consistency similar to 5W-30. Adventurous tattoo artists have used it in place of ink. If left outside during winter, it wonít freeze, even in Minnesota. Beneath the dark exterior, a swirling ambush of coffee and chocolate flavors await, held up by a decadent malt backbone. Like its namesake, The Worthy Adversaryís movements are mysterious. Be waryĖit could strike anywhere, any time.

Deep dark jet black. Three fingers of mocha head. Two feet away I can smell the coffee. Pretty much ridiculous. Rich coffee notes and vanilla unfold. It smells epic. In the mouth the rich coffee and vanilla are prevalent but they also give way to chocolate and roast. Not heavily but certainly noticeable.

Served on tap at 8th Street Grill in a snifter. WOW color me impressed. In the past Iíve been pretty nonplussed by the offerings Iíve sampled by Fulton. A brewery which is (BTW) less than a 15 minute bike ride from my home. This stout can go toe to toe with any Iíve had in recent memory. The color is a gorgeous rich just this side of ebony delight. The aroma is just a promise of what lies ahead. Rich coffee and warm toffee, hints of cocoa in harmony and balance. There is just the right amount of bitterness, and roasted malt goodness to make this a grand experience throughout. The almost $20.00 a 750ml had held me back from buying this at the liquor store, but I would now make the investment in order to cellar one of these beauties.

Hella good beer! Dark brown pour, beige head. Big dark chocolate up front, followed by vanilla, coffee, the perfect amount of roast. Very rich and full bodied. Great stuff.

This one can hang with the big dogs and at half the price it is often my first choice...hate to tell people in fear that it may someday become hard to get a hold of.

This is crude oil in a bottle! That's a good thing. Massive body and full flavor. Perfect with dark chocolate.

A very sneak up on you beer. Itís not as thick as the ABV would suggest. Which makes it way more drinkable. Nice roastiness, some bitterness, and a very ephemeral sweetness. Quite good.

Tap at the brewery. Snifter glass. Nice dark black color with a slightly tan quarter finger head. Aroma is relatively faint but brings roasted malt and slight coffee notes to the party. Hard to explain but a brightness to the beer at first sip that gives way to the stout strength as the sip continues. Definite coffee and roasted qualities but not an overwhelming presence. Nice balance and an easy drinkability despite the high alcohol content. Dangerous. A little bit of a nearly Belgian quad like essence which is probably why Iím on board. It is indeed worthy of a high rating. Might be the pinnacle of Fultonís stable.

One of a series of great (and strong!) beers I sampled at MKC in 2015. Thick, rich, licorice, coffee, chocolate, and cherry.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2010 On tap at the excellent Acadia Cafe. Pours deep oily black with a thick heavy head. Nose is rather subtle, might be from being served so cold. Iodine and soy sauce can be detected once the beer warms a bit. Mouthfeel is greasy and velvety smooth. Taste is wonderful, dark roasts with hints of vanilla and chocolate. This is a tremendous IS. I met the Fulton guys last night at Acadia (3/09) and they were super friendly.

Very dark pour, small head. Intense chocolate and yeast aroma, sweet and bright, nice oily palate. Excellent.
