Summer 2011 - A saison, but a session beer? A saison, but lager like? I’m like, 2 minutes in the door of my first visit at Funkwerks and already my brain is finding it hard to cope with what I’m seeing and feeling. After I’ve managed to stumble over to a nice seat outside to take in the sunset, we’re served our samplers, and at the start is the Funkwerks Casper. I look down and see a thick white head, dimpled with foamy geology, and a hazy yellow body. Just as the brewery described, I smell a nice, clean pilsner malt aroma, and even a touch of sulfur. The flavor is extremely light, and after a day of sampling beers all over the city it’s hard to tease out the subtle notes. The Casper just barely kisses the palate, but grants it a long, pils aftertaste. I’ve never had anything like it, but I’m intrigued. I also see a glass of this lasting a long, long time which might indeed make it an eminent session beer. bu11zeye (13140) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - APR 10, 2012
(Draught) Pours a clear pale yellow body with a medium white head. Aroma of lemon zest, grass, pepper, and grain. Flavor of grain, ginger, grass, light citrus, pepper, and vanilla ice cream. BeerBunker (965) - Burbank, Illinois, USA - MAR 21, 2012
On tap at Cheeky Monk in Denver. Pours a hazy orange color with a fizzy white head. Aroma is of wheat, apricot, assorted fruit, and malt. Taste is of wheat, and a lot more of the apricot. Has a decent flavor of grassy hops. Long lingering apricot taste. Not sure why there’s so much apricot in this one. Very carbonated and insanely fizzy. Has a slight tartness to it. Good beer, and very easy to drink. Definitely a session beer. durhambeer (2500) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - DEC 31, 2011
Tap at the brewery. Light blonde pour with large white head. Bready and pils-like aroma. Some grassy notes and notes of German hops as well. Slightly herbal character. Straightforward, very crisp. Lovely session beer. Oh to have this fresh all the time. BMan1113VR (7930) - Los Angeles, California, USA - DEC 9, 2011
On tap at the brewery. Pours with a clear yellow body and a voracious, white head. Aromas are grassy, funk, peppery, ginger, grassy, malty, bready and phenolic/spicy. Flavors are lightly tarty, pretty subdued yeast character, ginger, bready, orange, somewhat crisp. Lightly grassy. Tasty. Lively bubbles and dry as always!
Absolutely excellent session beer (despite my rating numbers, this would be a beer I’d want to drink every day)!
