What to expect
This tawny orange beer pours with a rocky white head. Aromas of passion fruit, tangerine, and black pepper hit the nose. Flavor is a cascade of orange, lemon verbena, ginger and pepper. And in a second it is gone, finishing with a dry and lingering bitterness that awaits another sip.

Bottle @ home 20150518. Huge head, fair head retention. Lively carbonation. Aroma of citrus, spices and bread. Taste is orange, pepper, and clove with a nice crisp bitterness. Dry and refreshing. Exactly how I like a saison.

Funkwerks Saison does justice to the brewery’s name. This Farmhouse Ale does indeed boast a lot of yeasty, Belgian-style funk. Yet, it has more to offer than that. For starters, the hazy, brownish-orange body produces a massive amount of head. The frothy, robust suds do a fine job of propelling the aromas of earthy yeast and tropical fruit esters. On the tongue, Saison starts off with spicy black pepper kick with some sweeter herbal tones to balance it out. At the middle of the mouth, you get some crisp hoppy bitterness. The finish is mellow and fruity with orange, lemon, and tangerine. The superb balance, rich complexity, and full-bodied flavor make this a world-class Saison that would taste good when paired with about anything and would suit any season of the year.

A lovely traditional saison. Every thing is spot on except for perhaps a lingering bitterness. Otherwise this beer rules.

Sampled at GABF on 9/18/2010. This saison pours a light gold color from a 750ml bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is sweet, spicy and floral. A medium bodied saison. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops and herbal and spicy. Lively carbonation. A very crisp and clean tasting saison. Light and refreshing. Finishes crisp and dry after starting out sweet. Excellent saison. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, crisp and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

UPDATED: JUL 3, 2013 This is awesome! Aroma is citrus, floral, hint of banana with some yeast notes as well. It’s a cloudy golden pour with a white head that doesn’t linger but clings to the glass. Taste is awesome. Fruity, yeasty, smooth and sweet with some slight sour funk notes. It really matures on your palate. The strange sour funk"ness" is what makes this taste so interesting. It’s refreshing and complex at the same time. Love it.

A-Bread, pepper, with a significant funky yeast aroma. A- hazy golden hue, big pillowy head that holds for a long time with nice lacing. T- biscuity, bread, pepper, and citrus. P-very lively body. Has a very pleasant mouthfeel and dry pop on the finish really highlighted by the carbonation. O-A very enjoyable saison with nice barnyard aromas and flavor. The Pepery dryness haswonderful popping citrus notes. One of my favorite saisons in quite some time.

one of the best American-made Saisons I’ve ever had. Bright, dry, aromatic notes of lemon zest and flowery black pepper, with a fruity freshness that makes the entire experience very mouth watering.

Pours a hazy honey/gold color with a large foamy white head...awesome rretention and heavy lacing. Aroma has light citrus and hoppy spice...just a touch of a honey note. Flavor has nice mild citrus and great spicy notes...very mild leather and wildflower honey notes. Mouthfeel is light and very lively with a dry spicy/leather finish. Great saison.

Pours a whitish yellow haze and a frothy, which head. Aromas of passion fruit, tangerine, and black pepper hit the nose. Flavor is a cascade of orange, lemon verbena, ginger and pepper. Overall, very good, with a floral, sweet aromatic yeast character.
