Draft at the Buddha grand opening. Pours a clear deep red. Nose is super fruity with alot of berry, cherry and raisin. Lacking some of the more prominant grape/wine aroma of the oak treated version. Flavor is again very fruity up front but is lacking some of the depth that the oak provided the treatment. Here the sweetness is even less prominant and the bitter finish a little harsher. As with the treated version, extended time in secondary will make this into a real winner.

On tap at the Buddha for the grand opening. Barley wines are pretty low on my list of go to beers, but this is a great shining example of a beer that could change my mind. The appearance is pretty dark and murky but the aroma’s are what really shocked me. The aroma’s were nice and fruity., lots of berries in there. The flavors hold a certain sweetness that easily mask the 11.5% ABV bite. A very enjoyable beer. hopscotch (11439) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - OCT 14, 2011
Draft… Very dark ale (ruby red when held up to bright light) with a small, creamy, off-white head. Minimal retention. Aroma-wise, chocolate malt and cocoa nibs stand out. Maybe a hint of cola. Ultra full-bodied with a chewy mouthfeel and gentle carbonation. The flavor is bittersweet, chocolaty and hints at black cherry. Acute bitterness and obtuse acidity. Dark brown, almost black with red hightlights. Sherry like nose, dark roast malts, dark cherry, currant and chcolate. Medium bodied, a bit under carbonated. A lot of dark fruit flavor balanced by the hops and roasted malt. Finish is long and warm. Well done.
