Double IPAs - you’re on notice. Small Axe Big IPA is a golden hued IPA that’s deceptively strong and full of tropical hop aroma. Cascade, citra, centennial, nelson sauvin, and nugget hops combine to form an aroma and flavor that’s straight up tropical, with heady notes of pineapple, orange, mango, guava, and grapefruit.

Draft pour at FB. Pours a mostly clear golden orange color and topped by a small layer of off white foam that settles in quickly to a thin film and leaves streaks of lace around the glass. The aroma is very fruity and sweet showing huge notes of orange, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and peach to go with a solid toasted caramel and bread malt base. The flavor follows suit with a huge wave of tropical fruits with mango, peach, and pineapple up front to go with the toasted bread and caramel malts and ample hop bitterness on the back end with some lingering grapefruit notes on the finish. The alcohol adds some heat as well to let you know how big this beer is. Medium bodied and a bit sticky with balanced carbonation that leads to a citrusy sweet and slightly bitter finish with a warming finish. Nice flavors from the hops, but it’s a little big and sticky for what I’m looking for in a double ipa.

At the M.I.A. brewhouse during a 3-hour layover at MIA as part of a sampler. Copper and slightly hazy with an off white collaring head. Tropical fruit all over the aroma and flavor. The alcohol is hidden, but leaves a nice coat across the tongue. Flavorful and complex.

Draft. Snifter nose is moderate pine fruit with a Danky orange note. Light lemon and grapefruit. Fairly clear, deep orange almost red color. Moderate bitterness with a light lactic sort of tartness. Kind of weird actually. Once past that the malt is moderate and honey like. Overall ok but not my fave. Revising. So after the entire glass I was over this beer. The weird lactic note kept coming back and distracted from the beer. Couldn’t finish a snifter.

Brassy colour and bright. Sweet up front but with quite a bit of alcohol and the taste of that is way too apparent. A touch of fruity hop but with a lot if sweetness.

On draft at the brewery. Pours a hazy yellow orange with a white head. Nose is pine, grapefruit, citrus pith, some tropical fruit, and more pine with caramel. Flavor starts with a nice backbone then goes into a hop assault with lingering grapefruit on the finish and a bitter in the end. Medium in body and an interesting DIPA overall.

Growler from brewery. Tropical fruit, guava. It’s hoppy, but fruit hoppy. Not bitter hoppy. Semi sweet.
