In order to get the right balance of smokiness with a hint of chilli heat, quite a few experiments were conducted with chillies jammed in bottles of dark beer, and brews of chilli tea. Some of the early experiments were a bit on the spicy side; just ask our drayman Archie who got tricked into trying a bottle of Vital Spark that had been infused with a Habanero for over a week!
Vic, Andy and Marissa from Brewdog Glasgow came up to the brewery to brew their beer on what turned out to be a monster 11 hour brew day. The guys from Brewdog Glasgow quickly learned the basics of brewing; don’t get stuck in the Mash Tun, and point the ends of hoses away from your face before turning on. They were put to work cleaning out the copper, loading the grist and digging out the mash tun, and of course a few beers were enjoyed throughout the day.
The beer was named 48 Miles Later, relating to the distance between the bar and the brewery, and will be launched, alongside the 11 other beers in the festival, in all Brewdog bars on Saturday the 19th with the Fyne Ales team doing a meet the brewer at Brewdog Glasgow from 5pm.

Bottled. 5cl sample. As 48 Miles Later. Thanks Menno. The aroma has moccha, roast, hints of pepper. Dark brown-black coloured beer with a thin, off-white lace. The taste is a bit sweet, bit bitter, light peppery has chocolate. Nice. But no (B)IPA.

Bottle shared by Menno, thanks! Quite some coffee and roasted malts in the aroma. Somewhat spicy flavor, but the chilies are hardly there. Peppery and dry. Nice.

Bottle at home, as 48 Miles later. Pours black, dry roast malts, almost salty, juicy fruits, earthy, light smoke, soft chili burn.

@Borefts13. Dunkel rötlichbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr röstmalzig, Kaffee, leicht hopfig fruchtig. Geschmack röstmalzig, schokoladig, würzig, fruchtig hopfig.

Draught @ 5th Borefts Beer Festival 2013, Brouwerij de Molen, Bodegraven, Netherlands.

[ As Fyne Ales/Brewdog Smoked Chilli Dark Ale ].
Clear dark red brown color with a small, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, sweet malt, moderate hoppy, fruity, light wood. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration, wood, malty, frozen fruit - water. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20130927]

Bottle. Dark brown with pale tan head. Aroma is fairly tame, slightly soapy and roast, meaty. Taste has some roast character and a some berries, little soapy. Quite bitter. Ok if a little unrefined and unexciting

Palme (4856) - Bergen, NORWAY - FEB 11, 2014
On tap @ Borefts 2013. A small bubbly dark Cola colored head on top of a dark Cola colored body. The nose is mild chocolaty with some soft hay and dark cold coffee. A bit mild on the nose perhaps, but not bad. Near flat on the mouth. Tastes alright. Stingy salty tar licorice, only subtle hint way back in the aftertaste that there has been chili on this. Wet rocks and a bits of silo grass. Absolutely decent but not very exciting to be honest. Hoped for a bit more punch. 28.09.2013

Borefts Beer Festival 2013. Black with no head. Aroma of toffee, licorice and green pepper. Dry malty flavour with licorice notes, vegetables and peppers. Slightly spicy finish. Thin and flat

Keg at BrewDog Shoreditch. Pours black-brown with a foamy, off-white head. Nice smoke and cocoa character in here. Great balance, mild earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lasting cocoa and burnt wood in the finish. Good stuff.

Gedronken op Borefts’13 van de tap. Zwarte/bruine kleur zonder schuimkraag. Ruikt smokey en hoppig. Smaakt voor mij te sterk, niet mijn smaak. Geen koolzuur.
