TAR (2802) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - AUG 21, 2014
From draft at Zoiglstube (R.I.P.) in Strassgiech in Dec. 2013: Yellowish bronze. Fine-bubbled creamy head exhibits good retention. Super clean aroma of tar, piecrust, tobacco, caramelized sugar, pecan, and licoricey hops. Softly prickly carbonation. Ripe plumlike esters are met by a stiff dose of spicy, woody hops and plentiful minerals. Body gains more firmness as the mouthwatering minerality dovetails with stone-derived scratchiness and Spalt-laced woodiness. Squeaky-clean maltiness showcases rich toastiness which deepens the gritty minerals and gripping caramelized sugars. Not at all too sweet given the high amount of caramelization. None of Andy’s trademark melanoidin character is detectable, but at the same time the malt is thoroughly extracted to the point of being smoke-rich. Extraordinarily deep, pillowy, well-textured as well, with an edgeless tobacco- and pecan-tinged base that’s infused with equally graceful tealike hops. Candyish yeast bite precedes a nectary, wood root spice hop smack which induces saliva before silky malt and brisk minerals cleanse the tongue. It seems that anything less than life-altering is a disappointment with Andy’s beer (even with his first/experimental recipes like this one), that’s how gifted the guy is. So, yeah, while it certainly doesn’t shake my world, it’s a lovely creation all the same. ninecats (534) - Uddevalla, SWEDEN - FEB 13, 2014
Draught at Akkurat, nov 24 2013. Amber clear color with three fingers white foam, some lacings. Aroma is soft, mainly caramel- and malt dominated. Some light hoppiness and smokiness. Taste is even more soft, velvet soft mouth with big malty flavors, burnt and caramellish. A well integrated smokiness that becomes more evident as after taste lingers on. Body medium, carbo is very soft. This is is very well crafted ale that goes down quick due to its soft (almost silk) character. Well done. 3fourths (9367) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 18, 2013
Enveloping caramelized sugar aroma with mild touches of smoked malt, unlike the classic Bamberger rauchmalz, nothing like an ash / wood note for me, and only a soft hint of "smoked ham", it’s much more a straight caramelized (lightly burnt) cara malt character, a kind of burnt pastry crust character. Minerallic and sweet, the body is lighter than is typical for Gänstaller, but it’s still delightfully soft with no huskiness or coarseness noticed. Balanced bitterness and a minerallic touch of Franconian hard water give it a salivating though restrained acidity. Toasted grain / bread crusts, sugar cookie, red apple skin / maraschino cherry / mild tropical fruits, the aforementioned smoke character.... quite a brilliant display of aroma and flavor. Seems in the approach too sweet for it’s size but, no surprise, the finish shows outstanding balance. Reddish amber body with a fine white head. From keg, multiple glasses at the Zoiglstube in Strassgiech thanks to Andreas.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 13 Dec 2013) Pale amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, toasty nose with caramel, a touch of smoke, toasty malt and orange peel. Malty, slightly smoky taste with notes of caramel, toast, apricots and a balanced grassy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and very well balanced. Nice one. Draft at the Zoiglstube.
Head is initially large, frothy/rocky, off-white, mostly lasting.
Body is dark yellow to light amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel, toasted bread), with notes of minerals, smoke, dried mango.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively/soft carbonation.
Lip-smacking deliciousness...obscene amount of minerality, and a mild but delightful level of smoke. Lovely cookie-fruity nose behind that makes it a joy to sniff, and although it errs a bit on the sweet side, it was still a joy to drink a full liter of.

On tap at Akkurat, November 2013.
Clear dark golden with a medium white head. Aroma of light smoke, malt, dried fruit. Similar taste, also some bread and hay. Not that bitter. This was a very, very drinkable beer with a smooth mouthfeel. After finishing the glass I had to order another one. Thanks to Akkurat and Gänställer-Bräu.

This beer has a perfect fluffy white head that lasts and leaves a mark on the wall of the glas for every sip of beer you take. Light malty aroma with a novbel hop aroma. Very nice caramell taste and a caramell sweetness. Small bitterness and very easy to drink. zvikar (6575) - Ramat Gan, ISRAEL - OCT 26, 2013
