Sweaty yeasty aroma, caramel, well developed, basement. Rich flavour with concentrated fruits and sweet sticky notes. Apple pie, Oatmeal cookies and still sort of refreshing. Dangerous! Love the sticky concentrate. Great stuff. (After Deanso’s tasting)

Tasting a French beer seems appropriate today so I dug this one from the cellar, very heavy winter ale, vintage 2011 with best before date April 27th, 2013. Loose, milky, irregular, pale greyish white head on top of a hazy mahogany brown beer. Strong aroma of brown bread (soggy rye bread even), chestnuts, caramel, pear brandy, blue plums, medlar, coriander seed, damp autumn leaves, dried thyme and ginger, bitter chocolate, a lot of oxidized sherry, marmelade, calvados, earthy horseradish, honey, white pepper. Sweetish onset, brown sugar, raisins, overripe pear, balanced with a deep basic sourishness and some citrus fraîcheur (curaçao, I guess); soft carbo, smooth and thick, ’fat’ and somewhat resinous mouthfeel, caramelly, clearly (yeast) bready and nutty with a chocolatey edge, while spicy yeastiness builds as well as coriander flavour and a strong, calvados-like alcohol presence, a bit astringent on the tongue but still fairly soft, yet providing a great deal of warmth in the finish; toasted bittersweetness remains along with this alcohol warmth, bittersweet and somewhat sticky coriander and a very earthy, leafy, herbal, mild hop bitterishness. Feels very Belgian, I’d classify this as a quadrupel much more than as a barley wine. Apart from style, this does not hide its ABV all too well, but if treated as a slow sipper in front of a roaring fire, it will surely deliver what it promises. Interesting find and stood the test of time quite well, as the oxidation is still limited, and only adds and extra layer of flavour to an already relatively rich texture.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 27/04/2013.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Lightly hazy reddish color, small beige head. Aroma is malts, sweetness, overripe fruits, alcohol. Taste malts, sweetness, a hint of caramel, a hint of toffees, alcohol, a touch of wine and overripe fruits. Medium body and carbonation. Quite nice.

Quite a nice barleywine. No overly sweet but full malt flavor. On the thin end but best french beer I’ve had.

Bottled, from La Cave à Bulles, Paris. Cloudy copper colour, small head. Aroma of honey, apples and white pepper. Sweet with full body . Lots of caramel and alcohol, especially in the finish. Too sweet and alcoholic.
