3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very good ale, nice flavorful hops without some of the odd citrus flavors that would spoil a strong ale. Could be even stronger, but probably right for the style.
From Dec 2007
I got this bottle in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!
This pours from 12oz bottle a clear medium gold with a 2 finger head of foam.
The smell is very malty and very nice. I also get a fruity nose that makes it a pleasure to sniff.
The taste has big caramel malt, dark fruit, some grain, and a surprisingly ample but not overpowering hop presence in the background that adds just the right touch to somewhat balance it out but to tell you the truth, I'm enjoying the hell out of the malt. Nice bit of bready notes here as well and the alcohol is completely hidden, asaic. Lovely drop!
It has a fairly thick mouthfeel(yeah!), the carbonation is medium light, and it finishes malty semi sweet. Again...lovely drop! Oh, and the foam hangs around like forever. I'm *really* impressed with this English Strong Ale and I'd seek it out again.

From old tasting notes. Winter of 1990/1991 Vintage. Deep Amber orange color. Bubbly beige head. Malty caramel-like aroma with a hint of yeastiness. Big toasted malt flavor upfront. Plenty of hop flavor right through to the finish. Very much like a Pale Ale, but with more oomph! Very good. Well balanced and full bodied. altonbrownd (5897) - Chevy Chase, Maryland, USA - JUL 2, 2016
Bottle from Chevy Chase Wine and Liquors. Nice brown body with slight head. Nose is faint. Taste malty, bread, some fruits and toffee. Nice floral finish. climberbob (497) - Virginia, USA - MAY 23, 2016
Beer club offering. Mahogany w tan head. Floral pine aroma. Taste has same elements w hints of butterscotch. Hop dominant but not excessive. Slightly slick mouthfeel. Higher alcohol notes in the aftertaste.

Had as part of a flight in their tiny tap room in Portland Maine. Dark orange with the good old English taste. Ok

Draft at J's Oyster Bar. Pours copper colored with an inch of brown foam. Leaves trace lacing. Decent malt notes on the nose. Fairly big malt clashes loudly with chunky bitterness on the tongue. It's kind of like licking a penny but it's not bad all things being equal.

Pour is a clear brown with a small white head. Like strykzone said below not much of an aroma comes off the beer. A Smallish dark bready malt is about it. Flavor is much better. A nice dark fruit with some toffee lingering. Finish has a lot of those dry bready almost pumpernickel flavors. Pretty good beer once you give it a chance Strykzone (7800) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - APR 28, 2015
12 ounce bottle from Hayduke. We had it together via facebook chat. Clear amber with a beige head. Just a little lacing. Not a lot of aroma but it is malty and has just a little fruit. The flavor begins with a big bitter bang with the malt underneath that. It quickly gets gentler and fruit emerges. Mid glass chocolate began to take over and almost did that completely by the finish. At some point alcohol was noticed as harshness. This was a fun beer to try. Despite not expecting to, I liked it. Patrickctenchi (6810) - Cox’s Knob, columbus, Indiana, USA - DEC 3, 2014
Clear, orange-red with a foamy tan head.
Fruit and berry aroma....grain.
Taste is bread, fruits, very malty....
Very strong, persistent alcohol bitter...come through a bit on the rocky side for only 7%.
