04/05 Blend. This just keeps showing me that I prefer a nice rounded and aged English BW over an American style. Favorite style for sure. Poured a hazy dark amber color with a small off-white head. Thick sweet malt in the aroma and flavor with caramel and fruity notes. Nice and rounded with good balance between the sweet malt and the high alc. I am sure the blending is the cause of this. Alcohol taste stays hidden. The effects of it do not. ;) alobar (3879) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 20, 2010
Possibly one of the most flavorful barleys I’ve ever had. Pours a reddish copper color wit no head. Powerful and pleasant aroma of caramel and dark fruit. Flavor of dark cherry, caramel and just a touch of hops. Super enjoyable! Great beer! 1FastSTi (3361) - Glendale, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 6, 2010
Thanks Jason for this blended 04/05 vintage. The beer came in a Sponge Bob Square Pants labeled bottle. Pours to a a deep chestnut colored body with a thin whitish head. The aroma is coconut and huge caramel. The flavor has a bunch of sharp bitter malt and grassy hop. Some light toffee and sweet caramel. The palate is a touch hot. Light tartness. Some more age would likely help. Shag (3036) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - APR 22, 2005
Poured a reddish brown color. A very sweet flavor with some molasses, raisins, oranges, and cherries. The alcohol is well hidden. The aftertaste is somewhat sour and warming. A good one! Slipstream (2675) - USA - MAY 12, 2010
On draft at the brewpub. For some reason, I jotted down "Phantome", so I’m not 100% sure this is the same brew - not sure where that spelling came from. Some unpleasant aspects to this stuff - diacetyl and cheap wine sweetness. Seemed a bit like a scotch ale to me, with a bit of prune and plum, and a hoppy finish. OK overall.

On draft at the brewpub. Pours a deep ruby red amber with a small off white head. Aroma of buttery notes, candied malt, and citrus. Taste is much the same as the aroma with a metallic aftertaste. MIBRomeo (2570) - Wisconsin, USA - MAR 7, 2010
Mahogany pour w a full off white head.
Toffee, some hot alcohols, lots of sugars maybe a pixie stick. whaleman (2178) - North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 28, 2006
Blend of 04 and 05 vintages. Attractive dark ruddy body with a small, silky beige head. Aroma has some nice cherry fruit and vinous characters plus organic elements of dark honey and bright woodsy hops. Flavor brings a nice blend of fresh hops and some more mature cherry and dark fruit skin characters. Pleasant level of sweetness with good counter-balance. Nice, interesting blended barley wine and a positive introduction to General Lafayette for me.

Known as Mcglynns Ghost. Wow. Sticky malty flavor.Caramel flavors. Deep brown in color with a thin head. Served in a snifter. Enjoyable. JFGrind (2064) - Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 10, 2005
The General Lafayette is offering vintage bottles on a selection of their beers. I purchased a 12 ounce bottle of 2003 vintage McGlynn’s Ghost (The Pahantom) for $12 USD. It was worth every penny! Heavy fruity aroma, dark red color, flat head, but overall a complex barleywine with a perfect marriage of malt sweetness and hop bitterness.
