Proud, headstrong, full of character. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave all these attributes to the rebellious Ghent “stroppendragers” or noose-wearers. And what goes for the people of Ghent also goes for this strong blonde beer. Nose/aromas: Relatively complex nose with hints of fruit (banana, citrus fruits), herbs, yeast, honey and sweet malt. Flavour: Refreshing in the mouth, pleasant sweet malty attack followed by hints of herbs and yeast, medium-long finish with subtle, slightly bitter touch.

Bottle 33cL from Delhaize Gent @home Pour pale, clear golden with a large white frothead, heavy retention. Sticks to the surface of the glass. The aroma is yeasty, floral hops, citric hops and hay. Also slightly metallic. Finish is slightly malty. Taste is mildly bitter with a dry, slightly sweet and bitter aftertaste, that lasts long. It’s got a medium body with a thin texture. It’s got lively carbonation and a long finish.

Golden coloured body with a thin, one centimetre tall white head and tons of bubbles coming from the bottom - very nice! Aroma of hay, grass, yeast, alcohol and a touch of spices - very nice aroma. Medium-bodied; Very grassy and herbal flavours throughout with a bunch of hops noticeable at first, then fading to a yeast and woodsy finish with a saison and biere de garde flavour coming through. Aftertaste shows a nice dry final taste with a touch of light sugars, some subdued malty notes and a bit of pepper and spice - very nice. Overall, a well crafted beer with plenty of herbs, spices and dry notes! Definitely worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this 33 cL stubby bottle purchased from de Bier Tempel in Bruges, Belgium on 14-August-2013 for €2,50 sampled in my hotel room here in Gent, Belgium on 16-August-2013.

Bottle, 330 ml, poured into a tulip at home. ABV 6.9% Clear and deep golden yellow colour on the body, with a constant stream of bubbles rising to the surface. Huge white head, thick and soapy, with fantastic retention and heavy lacing as it collapses. Aroma is light fruity, with yeast notes and florar hops. Obvious alcohol after a deep sniff. Nice and refreshing taste, fruity, belgian yeast, grapes. Mild bitterness with good duration. medium thin body, average airy carbonation, very dry on the palate. Good belgian ale with high drinkability.

Taste: metallic, bit hop bitter, initial bitter but gains on with a small sweet finish. Classic Belgian blond, bit metallic but overall okey, nothing great. 25/07/2013 @ Gentse Feesten: Mat van kleur, maar met volle witte schuimkraag. Wat hooi en droog gras in de neus. Zoetig van afdronk maar beperkte nasmaak. Vrij middle down the road. (6/3/6/2/11)
