Proud, headstrong, full of character. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, gave all these attributes to the rebellious Ghent “stroppendragers” or noose-wearers. And what goes for the people of Ghent also goes for this strong blonde beer. Nose/aromas: Relatively complex nose with hints of fruit (banana, citrus fruits), herbs, yeast, honey and sweet malt. Flavour: Refreshing in the mouth, pleasant sweet malty attack followed by hints of herbs and yeast, medium-long finish with subtle, slightly bitter touch.

Bottle. Light golden, large white head. The aroma is fruity, yeasty, some spices. Dry, pale malt flavour, some spice, some hops. Uneventful.

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2015 Launched in 2011, this is a typical top-fermented blonde aimed at tourists frequenting outdoors cafés in Ghent, the inhabitants of which are called ’stroppen’. Big and rocky, lightly yellowish white head, pale golden blonde colour, clear with an enormous and beautiful amount of fizz, even more so than a glass of champagne would show. Weak aroma of green apple, pear, young cheese, vanilla, grassy hops. Soft and lightly fruity taste, apple touch, bit grainy, rather neutral, light malt sweetness, finish mildly hopped, thirst-quenching but not really bitter. Straightforward and shallow but technically correct, this serves its purpose as a simple but nice looking beer to pour down thoughtlessly whilst enjoying the view of the old Ghent city centre...

So heavily carbonated that its difficult to drink. Nice taste once you get it down though. Lots of hay, grass, pepper, and ends very dry.

330ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours clear gold with thin head. Aroma is fairly sweet and sugary. Taste is slightly metallic, with yeast, straw, sugar and very light citrus. Bit too highly carbonated for me though. Ok but nothing more.

Clear(ish) yellow body with a voluminous white head and some carbonation apparent. Aromas of fresh lemon juice and some classic estery Belgian ale yeast. It smells bright, fresh and inviting. The flavour is initially sweet and juicy with citrus characters and lemon curd. The on-goinging characters in the mouth is the lemon meringue that becomes tart. It’s a wee sweety this one.

Clear dark yellow with big lasting, lacing white foam head. Quite some carbonation. Aroma and taste are quite regular, nothing outstanding, just a good Belgian beer. (Velp 201408)
