2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
DATE TASTED: August 3, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Samuel Adams Boston Lager... OCCASION: watching Money Ball--and loving it!... APPEARANCE: handsome black and tan split-level body; thin white head that staggers on its reddish-brown base--looks inviting... AROMA: fragrant caramel malts breath a bready blast; sugary suggestions as well... PALATE: medium-to-light bodied with a swift, soft aftertaste--a red in the pattern of the many during its mid-90s deluge that we came of drinking age to at college...TASTE: strongly malted base forms the brunt of this old-time Hess Tavern offering; rather flat, rounded ops that profile as an ESB, though not enough hops surface to make an ale; a bit buttery too--but more in the feel than in the taste; the after drag is slightly warm and rough... OVERALL: a lagered, emasculated ESB that fulfills its March Ides duty but cannot demand much more on a cool summer night such as this...recently I toasted the anniversary of my wife and I by romantically recalling this beer set next to mine (a Honey Brown) on a college bar basement table; out of context, Killians looks nice in that oddly-necked bottle, but now under Coors’ auspices, one can see what is and is not present in this beer...
Red style beers have not been my favorites lately. When I first got into craft beers they were delicious but I am not enjoying them at all. This is just ok

From old tasting notes. Nice copper red color with a medium tan head. Mildly sweet toasted malt aroma. Sweet toasted malt flavor fades quickly and becomes salty, then gassy. Light dry finish and aftertaste. Thin and watery. Westy1130 (97) - New York, USA - APR 25, 2017
Medium amber color with medium head. Aroma is mostly roasted malts. Smooth and doughy on the palate. Taste: mostly corn, grass, and malt.
A step above typical adjunct lagers, but nothing special. PugUglyBrewer (692) - - APR 22, 2017
Rich, clear amber to copper color with a short-lived head of white foam. Traces of dried dark fruits and caramel malt overall. SOme dry grain and sweet floral and honey characters dancing around. scarletfire65 (1472) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 23, 2017
Bottle at Max’s Diner in Buffalo, after Mr. Gugino’s funeral :( Clean grainy aroma. A very nice red lager, sweet malts, grassy hops, not much complexity, but really drinkable.

Un bon ensemble pour une rousse mais un certain manque d’arôme, c’est dommage. WarEagle15 (1) - Ocilla, Georgia, USA - JAN 21, 2017 does not count

Much bread or bread crust. If that is what you are going for, then this is really good. Part of the reason I like this beer is that you cannot drink just one and you can still enjoy the taste of the second and third. Not very complex but it does not need to be. onceblind (9869) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 21, 2016
Clear rich Amber hue under a dissipating ivory cap. Golden brown bread toast on the aroma, with some lagery beery cracker tones. Semisweet flavor that has some light toast and light caramel/toffee, lager cracker, and a doughy bread toast finish. Like a bock but sweeter and amberish and much more blatantly lagery.
