Delicious impy CDA, albeit on the sweet side ... and roastier than most, pushing it into the "hoppy stout" realm. Regardless of how you label it, it’s good. Loaded with chocolaty malts and piney hops. Other notes of bread crust, tar, smoke, tobacco, black licorice, wood and citrus.

This is poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking dark brown to black color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light sticky lacing.
The smell started off being somewhat roasty coffee bean but it quickly faded to nothing really. The rest of the smell was basically a weird citrus candy aroma.
The taste was mainly the sweet citrus candy flavor.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. The carbonation was a bit soft for the style.

Dégustée (bouteille) le 1er juin 2013 au Mondial de la Bière 2013 à Montréal (D19C4KPPPi). Bière noire opaque. Col mince beige foncé crémeux et persistant. Odeur de chocolat noir. It’s black with a finger of tan foam. Smells of coffee, soil, resin, pine and some cocoa. Okay nose for the style, pretty standard. Flavor is hoppy porter: toasted malts, dry dusky flavor with a strong bittering addition and plenty of PNW hops - resin, pine, some BO. Medium bodied with moderated carb and a dry finish. This is an average beer in most respects.

651mL at Scion shared by Travlr. Thank you! Clear cola pour. Weak bubbles..okay head when poured correctly. Nose is sharper plastic, acetone, paint thinner. Eventually these volatile notes dissipate and leave the aroma meaty and smokey like a good Black IPA but flashes of PTSD from the acetone aren’t helping. Taste is tangy, dry, dusty at first moving to something in the Black IPA realm but not quite there- too much lemon, aggressive piney hops peek through, small roast. Not so bad besides the aroma. How: From a bottle at Montreal Mondial 2013.
The look: Dark mahogany body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention.
In long: The hop-forward nose of medium intensity is mostly piney with citrusy and floral notes as well as a good roast coming through. Taste is a bit sweet on the attack with a favor a nutty chocolaty brownies. Good hopping that feels a bit more citrusy than in the aroma. Not quite refreshing but still very easy to drink. Medium body and medium carbonation. Named after a long-standing tradition during which all Americans go shopping and feel sad for the people who live in the countries where families cannot afford diet pills for their children.
Deep dark brown coloured body with a rich, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of nice rich roasty malt, oatmeal, caramel, grass, pine and a good amount of lighter, but still assertive hops. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour of malt and caramel mixed with a big dose of grassy and citrusey PNW hops with a super rich earthy and sweet finish. Aftertaste shows a very rich almost chocolatey malt finish with a lot of sweetness, but even more hop bitterness - very good and very strong. Overall, a very nice Black IPA that borders on being an Imperial Black IPA, perhaps it is so - but it’s a very good beer, drinkable, yet assertive and strong. Probably the best so far of this numbered series of Gigantic beers, and one that I wish I had more of! 1. IPA with dark malts added for coloring
2. IPA with dark malts added for flavor and color
Gigantic clearly went with option #2 and did a damn fine job of it. Quite possibly the best beer for Friday the 13th. Evar.
