Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

This brew ("Beer #40") pours a clear dark ruby-amber color with a medium thick off-white head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel, fruit and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops. The finish is slightly syrupy with a malt and piney hops aftertaste. Pretty good beer all around.

Poured into a snifter, the color was a ruddy dark amber color with no head, but does have some alcohol strings along the sides. The aroma blends some figs and red delicious apple to smooth over some tobacco leaf earthiness, clean with some subtle vanilla. Subtle earthy spice. Toffee and caramel malts. The flavor yields to a malty smooth toffee to caramel malt sweetness, somewhat sticky. Tobacco leaf hops and earthiness blend into the figs and red delicious apple, once again. Quick malty smooth aftertaste leading into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a great sipping smooth body. Mild carbonation. Overall, really nice barleywine, but if this is supposed to an American styled one, the hops seem to be a bit more faded than expected. I dig for me, but I didnt see any dates anywhere.

Tasting in Rome-Italy with daniele and Mortlach, bottle from Johnny Off License. Reddish caramel clear bright, little lacing. Nose: caramel American barley wine notes, classic. Pastry, some almonds, marzapane. Mouth: sweet really, caramel, contemplation character but very rich in aroma. Christmas beer in front of a fire place. Yes!

Bottle shared by Ace. Poured a deep reddish-amber amber with a foamy light beige head. Aroma/flavor is just way to sweet, caramel, raisin, dough, loads of sugar, fermenting sugars....just so cloying. Blah....

Some kind of aroma jumped out when i popped the capmilk chocolate, malt vinegar, saw dust. Makes my mouth happy, a creamy texture. Flavor leans to the sweetmore chocolate, resiny underpinning, cherry, alcohol. Pretty reddish brown with thin off white head. Powerful stuff, break out the snifters. Another well-crafted beast from the Gigantic folks.
