COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewers in the midlands of England would boil their barley wines ales for longer times to intensify their flavors. In making Massive! we used only British Halcyon pale malt and boiled for eight hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. Heavily hopped, Massive! is a beer that can be enjoyed now for its intensity, or after years and years and years of aging.

On tap at Gigantic. Colour...somewhat cloudy garnet amber with an off white head. Nose...massively (pardon the pun) hoppy with a resinous character and bits of sugar sirop to boot. Palate...viscous, coating and chewy with more hops and a hop candy flavour to meld with the massive malt! This barley wine hides its abv very well and doesn’t seem even remotely 12%! There’s plenty of caramel to go with the hops and toffee on the finish. Nicely done!

"Well, they got the name right. Deep, and BIG, in every sense of the word. This is pretty much what I am looking for when I’m in the mood for a barleywine. Rich toffee, fruity sweet, but with more than enough hops to notice. The body is great for a beer of this strength. Dangerously drinkable and very very tasty. If the abv didn’t show itself more as the beer warmed, I’d have scored this even higher."

Thanks! to DutchDrebus. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ ZZT XIII. Deep red amber. Nose is weird herbal bitterness mixed with cough syrup, mocha, light cherry, candy. Taste is herbal bitterness mixed with thick malts, sugar, light syrup, herbs, candied fruit,… Big syrupy body. Interesting, touch odd in a good way. Good brew.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver; 12 oz
Dark mahogany color with barely any head. This is not your typical American Barely wine: aroma and flavor are very "fruity", it’s sweet but not cloying, it’s malty but without heavy toffee presence, fruity caramel, no fresh oak/bourbon/vanilla, not nutty, moderately bitter, with gentle alcohol warmth in the final.
More similar to strong Belgians, such as Stille Nacht pre-2003, than to Barley Wines.
Excellent sipper.

ochniczek (354) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAY 9, 2015
tap at Mikkeller Bar. dark brown/ruby colour, slightly hazy. no head and no lacning. Very rich and complex aroma of sweet tropical fruit, caramel and cocoa. Sweet taste with notes of toffee, caramel malts, dried fruit and vanilla. Palate is very long in a bittersweet way. average carbonation. Delightful...

Dark brown, wonderful creamt tanned head. Smell of dark fruits, toast, orange zest, dark malts. Heavy sweet, zest, fruity elements, dark fruits and malts, sirupy and delicious. Heavy bitter, resin tail

Graveyard mix aroma hard to explain but comes across very sweet. Very clean and clear appearance. Still a slow sipping barley wine but the 12% abv not that present.
