Beatnik is a cunningly light, crisp pale ale. It showcases delicious tropical hop flavour above a pure Maris Otter base. Its flavours and aromas belie its ABV.

It bills itself as a pale ale, so I’m going to review it that way. Great hop aroma, with a lot of pine and citrus notes. The flavor has a good amount of that hop punch, but the Maris Otter malt is strong too, which creates a balanced but moderately malty pale ale. Quite good, but I’d have dialed back the malt flavor.

Bottle, March 2016. Gauzy bathfoam heaped orange. Pleasantly humming leafy green, peppery herb, lemon sherbet and celery-like citrus aroma scoring an 8. Edgy lime flecked citrus flavour with a slurp of lambic, kumquat, stewed tea, hints of raisin. Soapy floral slightly agricultural and saison-like with good bitterness to finish.
