How best to describe the Black Emperor? Black Pilsner? American Black Lager? Pseudo Schwarz? Whatever it is, its brewed with malt from New Zealand, Germany and England, hops from America and yeast from Germany. Dark, bitter and thirst quenching

Mmm, delicious. Warm chocolate and citrus on the nose, in the mouth is very rich, round, sweetness of fruit balanced with dark sophisticated malt. This is a rick lovely IPA, dark, bitter-sweet, gorgeous. More, please.

Dark black in colour with thick toffee coloured head that dissipated quickly. Nice chocolaty/maltyaroma. Hoppy chocolate flavour. Strong coffee bitterness that lingers for ages.

Being an oxymoron, "Black Pilsner" is certainly not the best choice to describe this beer. Unfortunately these Black American Lagers are not among my favourite style. I find that the citrus flavours and hop aromas get too much on the way of roasted malts. Still, this medium-bodied Black Emperor did have interesting chocolate and charred notes on the taste, less on the finish. I hate to bring the lowest score to this group, but it is honest, from the bottom of my taste buds.

Tap at Beervana 2011. Black pour with a small, creamy head. Lots of heavy roasted malts and chocolate on the nose. Comes through the same in the taste. Decent quaffer

Somehow, I managed to not have rated this beer. Itís a lovely "black pilsner". Spicy and citrussy hops, a firm bitterness, and a charred, smoky, slightly sweet malt profile make for an interesting and very drinkable beer.

Black with chestnut hues. Light roma, a little dark malts and hop warmth. Reasonable balanced with nice malt profile that dark beer fans should find a liking to. Gets a bit zingy, then the lttr stages is some tight hop dryness and more char notes to finish. Good drinker

Black with a creamy head... first thing you pick up on the aroma is crisp green pine and citrus hops then dark coffee malt... YUM These follow though on the palate with an extremely clean finish due to the lager yeast used.

Rigger from tap at Hashigo Zake. Pours a black/brown held to the light with a great tan head - great for a schwarz. Aroma has heaps on NZ hop goodness which works well with the dark chocolate of the malt.
In the mouth the body of the beer is outstanding. Full and rich, with nice roast and significant hops. This could be a cascadian dark ale if I didnít know otherwise. My favourite Golden ticket release yet!
